She is sitting on a rock, back facing me, as I advance towards her. I place my hand on her shoulder, and Tris jerks backwards, pointing a knife towards me. I dodge it by just one centimetre.
On seeing me, her eyes soften from the expression of ferocity to love. I look at her with a crooked grin, and say,"You didn't leave behind your Dauntless roots even when in heaven, huh?"
She smiles. It's the beautiful Tris smile. But then I ponder over what I just said. She in heaven? Why? She's alive.
"Why are you here, Tris?" I ask.
"What do you mean by 'here'?" She asks, air-quoting the word 'here'.
"Here," I point to the ground, which is not actually the ground, because we are in heaven, "Heaven."
"Oh," her eyes instantly lose their brightness and her expression drops,"Because...I am dead?"
"You're not dead," I say, confused,"you're alive. And you're with me on earth."
"Listen to me carefully, Tobias. Your life is made of the decisions you make. You decide your life, but the basic is already written out for you. So, even the tiniest decision you make will prove important in your life. You know that better than I do."
"Yes, but why are you telling me all of this?" I ask ,"Tris, is something wrong? You can tell me."
She shakes her head,"I can't, Tobias."
The words hit me hard, and I feel like I've been struck by a sword, why would Tris ever say that she can't tell me something?
"Tris, tel-"
"Now," she interrupts, folding my hands into hers,"You listen carefully, okay? People are going to cheat you, and you cannot trust anyone and everyone, just because they are your friends. Tomorrow you're going to face something that will decide you life after that. Think carefully, and DON'T agree to everything. Some of them are going to allure you into things you are going to like to hear, but, ALERT, don't just follow people blindly-"
"Why are you telling me all of this? Can you just be a little clear in what you say?"
"I can't tell you everything, Four," she says.
"Stop calling me Four," I say,"And why can't you tell me everything? Why are you here?"
"Tobias, listen, please. I can't tell you everything because life is made of what you think and end up deciding. I cannot influence your decisions even slightly. Then, it won't be fair. But I am warning you. There are just two people you can trust. Don't jump to any conclusions just because they are your friends. Think rationally."
"Dauntless don't think rationally."
"And you're not Dauntless anymore.
"Yeah, right."
"Two people. That's it. That's who you're going to need to trust."
"Why don't you tell me who those two people are?"
"Because I cannot."
"Why? Because you cannot influence my decisions? Well, I ask you to."
"It's not possible. If I do, I won't be here for long. They'll send to some other place where I won't be able to talk to you ever again. "
"Uh..."
"You need to think and tell who those people are. They might be friends, enemies, strangers.."
"Isn't that a little to specific?" I say sarcastically.
She sighs and looks at me as if I am a second grade boy who barely understands anything.
"You're going to face a difficult situation, soon. Be careful if your choices, okay?"
"Okay," I say, leaning in to kiss her."Tobias!" A voice screams in my ear. I jerk up on my bed, and look around. Tris is standing there with an angry look.
"What?" I ask, feeling a drowsy.
"Are you sure you're not Hypnos?"
"Uh.. That Greek sleep guy?"
"Exactly."
"I hope not."
"I shook you a hundred times but you didn't even move a muscle."
"I was exhausted," I say, getting off the bed,"Now, I need to tell you something."
"Go ahead."
"I need Christina here, too."
"Well, now isn't the best time for that, then."Wait. Why is Tris here? She was in my dream and admitted being in heaven, then why is she here with me?
"What colour are your eyes?" I ask.
"See for yourself."
"Tell me."
"Blue."
"But your eyes are black."
"Those are lenses."
"Why on earth would you need lenses?"
She looks at me like I'm crazy,"Cause I have them?"
Her reasoning doesn't seem that valid, but I accept it anyway. Why would Tris ever lie to me? She's Tris, after all.
Don't jump to any conclusions just because they are your friends. Think rationally, Tris' voice echoes in my head. But that's Tris. She so surely one person I need to trust."I'm not lying," she says,"Incase you're thinking that's the case."
"Okay."
"You don't seem convinced."
"Well, what am I called Four?"
"Isn't that a little too basic?"
"Why not start with the basics?"
"So, now what? You'd don't even trust me?" She sounds offended.
"I do trust you. But please, answer these questions."
She hesitates.
"You've got four fears, that's why. Marcus, confinement, shooting an innocent person and heights."
What position was I in my initiate class?"
"First."
"Who gave me my first tattoo?"
"Tori."
"Who was my instructor?"
"Amar."
"Who was my co-instructor for your initiate class?"
"Lauren."
"What did Peter do to Edward."
"Peter stabbed Edward in the eye with a butter knife."
She knows everything. I believe her now.
"I love you."
"I know you do. I love you, too."
