"Hey, Aubrey! How 'bout we go to Dairy Queen and get a couple of cones after school?" Asked Jacob, my super cute boyfriend of six months. He had jet black hair, blue eyes, and an English accent to die for.
"Hey, yeah that sounds great, meet at my locker?" "See you then." He said with a wink. You don't come across many English guys in California, and of course, I was a sucker for an English accent. I was heading to my next class when my best friend Brooklyn popped out of nowhere and scared me,
"Boo!" I screamed, "Oh my gosh, Brooklyn, do NOT do that ever again, I almost pee'd my pants!"
She laughed,"Sorry, you should have seen the look on your face! So what class are you going to now?" Of course, she knew the answer, she just wanted to hear me say my two favorite words, please note my sarcasm.
"Come on, you know, it's halfway through the school year. Your eighth hour jokes are getting old."
'No, I'm serious! I must have amnesia or something, have I asked you this before? I have math, and you have...?" She loved to put me in agony.
"Social. Studies. And I'm already three minutes late. Goodbye, Brooklyn." I said through clenched teeth.
"Oh, sorry Aubrey, well I'm off to MATH class, bye!" She said, and skipped off, knowing she had won this one. As I walked into the classroom, trying not to be noticed, the substitute teacher began the lesson.
"Good morning class, Mrs. George is sick with the stomach flu, and today I will be your sub, my name is Ms. Harrison. Now, you will be studying foreign countries for the next two weeks, you will be assigned to one country per person, Mrs. George left this for you all." She held up a gardening hat filled with different pieces of paper.
"Each one of you will draw a piece of paper, and that will be your country." She started at the first row, I was in the second.
"Sweet! England, I should know a lot about that country." Said Jacob, sending me a smile.
"India? My grandmother lives in india!" Proclaimed a student with an Indian accent, wonder why... As kids kept yelling their countries, like it was a prize, it soon got to be my turn. As I opened the paper I read the card aloud.
"Siberia? I know the name, but where is that, I've never even seen it on the map." As I said that the substitute gave me a look of disgust.
"Obviously, some people need to do some research on their countries, so go to the library and see if they have anything on your country." As soon as she said it I went to the front of the classroom and got a library pass, they were very childish, but if we so much got out of our desks without asking, Mrs. George would have a fit. When I got to the library I went straight up to the desk, there were four other kids from my class in front of me. Great. When I finally got to the front of the line I asked,
"Any books or magazines on Siberia?" The librarian had to check her computer at first, but eventually she found something.
"Oh yes, not many though." She led me to the foreign country section, them the S's, and eventually pulled up about four books and a couple magazines, she picked up one of the magazines.
"Oh, this could be interesting, it has an article about the princess of Siberia, she was kidnapped, it dates back to 1997, you might like it." She handed me the magazine, on the cover was a picture of a baby girl, dressed in a green robe, wearing pearl earrings, and a locket. Strange. I felt my hand go to my ear, pearl earrings, and then my hand went to my locket, it looked exactly like the one she had in, both of which I had since I was a baby. What a coincidence. My locket had two people in it, my birth parents. When I was about a few months old my parents had adopted me, they told me when I was eleven. It was hard to take in at first, my mom and dad had brown hair, and brown eyes, just like me, so I thought they were just kidding, but apparently not. No one at school knew except for Brooklyn and Jacob. Brook was very supporting when I told her, that's why I love her, because whenever you have a problem she's there for you, no matter how bad. I took two of the books and both of the magazines and put them on the librarians desk.
"Can I check these out?" I asked her,
"Well, you certainly may!" She replied. As I walked out of the library I was looking at the magazine she showed me, I noticed the princess' name was Jessica Ukavich, And she was the same age as me,name had been taken on July 5th, 1997. My parents had adopted me about a month after, creepy huh?
