Melanie’s POV
I never open my door unless the bell rings three times. I sat on my coach when the bell rung twice, but that was it. I decided to take a look. No one. I looked around to check if it was Michael Junior, my neighbor’s boy. It wasn’t him. As I was about to close the door, I saw an envelope. I bent down and picked it up, no return address.
I was curious about what was written inside. I dropped the envelope on the counter and went to the kitchen to grab a cup of oj. I sat down and opened it up: “I’m sorry. Truth is, I’ve always been envious of you. Everyone always liked you, even in elementary when you were the new kid. You never had to work for acceptance. When we first saw Ashuan, I totally fell in love with him. At first you never show interest in him, so I tried to get with him, but he always rejected me. He never wanted me. Those days I told you about my dates, those were all lies. I was living in a fantasy world with Ashuan. When y’all got together, I vowed to break y’all up because I thought that I deserved him more than you although he never once showed interest in me. He thinks of you every day. He always calls out your name in his sleep. I try pretending that he was over you, but deep down inside I always knew that we were never going to last. I just never imagined it this way. He really loves you and I know you still love him too. I’m truly sorry.
I lost the baby few days ago. I got into an accident which all led to my miscarriage. It’s really hard to talk about all of this. I can’t keep the tears back. I now realized that I was the only one in the relationship all these while. I love you Mel and I’m really really sorry. I miss us. I miss the laughter, the juvenile jokes, and the ups and downs. You were like my sister, my best friend. I know I ruined everything and I’m sorry. I love you. Sincerely SA.”
Wow, that’s all I could say. I’ve never heard Sara speak, in this case, write like that. I was really stunned. I couldn’t blame her, after all that’s Sara. Hoping to meet her, I grabbed my keys and drove to Ashuan’s house. In the beginning, I never that about what I was doing, until he opened the door. “Mel...” “Hi, uhm is Sara in?”
“Uh, come in.” I walked in and waited for a while. No Sara. “Have a sit.” “Listen, I’m not here to talk, I’m here to…” “I know, please just...sit.”
‘Oh boy.’ I sat down and it was all silence. The silence was too loud in a way. I got up and said, “Listen, when Sara comes back…” “She left.” “What? Where? When? How?” “Few hours ago. She left.” “Wow, ugh I’m really sorry.” I got ready to leave when he grabbed my hands again. Déjà vu. I felt sorry for him. I gave him a hug of reassurance. I wasn’t mad at him anymore. Just because we weren’t together anymore doesn’t mean we couldn’t be friends. After all, he was my friend before he was my lover.
I stayed a little longer than I planned. I wanted to make sure he was alright. I made some chicken soup, and we drank it together while watching a movie. It felt extremely good to be home once again. Temporally.
Ashuan’s POV
With all the bull shit I’ve been going through, I was happy that Mel put aside our problems to comfort me. Losing a child is never the easiest thing to go through. I could only imagine what Sara went through and is going through right now. Sitting here in the parlor with Mel right next to me, I felt as if all my problems evaporated.
I know that there are lots of things we need to talk about, but I was just glad that she was here in the first place. I love Mel with all my heart. She has always been and always will be the woman that will complete me. I never want to repeat what happened to us again. If it meant starting over, then so be it. As we watched the movie in silence, her phone rang.
