A little while ago I published my "Founder of Fandoms" chapter. It basically said that JK Rowling was the founder of the fangirl.
And for the most part, that's true.
However, someone pointed out Star Trek. And it was really then I only realised that Star Trek was probably the first 'cult' tv show/ movie that I ever watched. Ever.
I was watching Kirk and Spock with my Dad since I was 8 years old. And I still watch it. It's one if the classics that you can go to anytime. And if you don't like Kirk, whatever*. Try Picard or Krusher or Archer (man I love Archer).
They each keep the Star Trek 'ethos' but they all have subtle differences. Which I really like.
My personal favourite captains are Kirk and Archer.
I love the crew of the Enterprise the most. I mean, Chekov is a cute little Russian butterfly of excellence and Nyota is a badass, sweet, beautifully independant woman who every girl should grow up looking up to. I love Spock and Bones and Sulu and just about everybody.
Don't get me wrong, Trip and Malcolm are still cute as hell but for me, they don't pack the same punch as the crew of the Enterprise.
I think for the older generation if obsessive fan, Star Trek was the starting point.
I still stand by what I said about Harry Potter being the series that started a whole new generation of fan. And introduced more girls to geekdom.
But I felt the need to at least acknowledge one of the greatest and longest standing fandoms ever.
You go Star Trek. Live long and prosper.
*but who doesn't like Kirk
