I look behind me and there coming up behind us was another riptide. This one was bigger than the first one. Last thing I said to Maddy was “Maddy listen, you hold on to the tree and don’t let go. OK?” Maddy nodded back at me. “On three go under ok?” I say again. “One, Two and THREE”. Maddy and I went under. I held her hand but then my hand slipped out of Maddy hand I got to the surface, and next to me was Maddy screaming “Hold me mum, hold me.” So I did. I saw a tree trunk floating in the water. “Get on to that tree Maddy” I cried. She did, I grabbed her hand and we were both on the log floating to the middle of nowhere. “Mummy I’m scared I want to go home.” Maddy cried. I whispered in her ear “I am to but we have to stay strong to find daddy and Alex and don’t forget Daniel”

After a while of floating on the log Maddy said “Mum look over there, that tree. We could climb it.” I replied “yes, yes we could let’s go”. We both let go of the log and swam to the tree. It wasn’t far but it seemed like miles away because of the pain I was in. when we reached the ‘shore’ it was thenwhen I realised how badly hurt I was, I could not stand up. I had a gaping wound on my chest; a slit down my leg, most likely a broken ankle or leg and god knows how many smaller cuts and bruises I had. Maddy had many cuts and bruises too but not as many as me. The biggest one she had was on her head. It was from the middle of her forehead down to her ear. There was still blood coming out of it. Maddy looked at me in a very shocked way. “What’s wrong Maddy” I said to Maddy. Maddy pointed at my wounds, she had tears dripping from her eyes. I look at where she was pointing and said “Maddy look at me, what more important, finding dad and your bothers or worrying about my cuts. If there was a mirror you’d be horrified by the look of your face. So listen to me we will find a hospital and I’ll be fine. OK?” Maddy nodded. So we started to look for any other sighs of life that could help us.
