Two
I decided to call my wife to check up on her. I had been on a business trip for two days, and I felt it was only reasonable to call her.
I dialed the number, and the phone rang a few times before I heard her sleepy voice greeting me with a hello.
"Hey honey. I just wanted to check on you." I said softly.
"Aw baby. I miss you. When will you come home." She replies.
"Not tonight, but maybe tomorrow evening. The meetings are pretty hectic." I sighed.
DING DONG!
I heard the doorbell on the phone. "Honey, are you expecting someone?"
"No I actually wasn't." Her voice sounded confused. "I'll go check who it is."
I heard her walking downstairs. She doesn't say anything. "There is someone at the door." She whispers. "Who is it!" She yells out. The knocking continues.
"Do you know who it is?" I asked with concern.
"No. Our glass is thick glass remember?" She stutters. "If you don't go away, I'll call the police!" She yells out.
The silence filled my ears. My heart was racing.
"AHHHHHHH!" My wife screams. "He's breaking in! He has a hammer, and he broke the window at our door!" She starts running, and I could hear the madness.
"Shit!" I took out my cellphone, and dialed 911."
"Hello?" The operator says.
"There has been a break in at my house! I am not there. I'm in a different state now, but my wife is at home!" I gave them my address, and phone number, along with my wife's cellular number."
"Ok sir we will get there as quickly as we can." The phone disconnected, and I went back on the hotel room phone.
"Honey are you there?" I panicked.
"Shh shh. I'm hiding in the bathroom." She says in a hushed tone.
"Okay." I held my breath. Please don't let anything happen to her.
"AHHHHH!" I heard my wife screaming, and some wood breaking sound. I heard running. I heard loud footsteps.
"Honey run!" I screamed.
"WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS!" She screams out to the intruder. "DON'T HURT ME PLEASE!" She pleads.
I hear my wife crying, and a lot of shuffling noise.
"I love you." She says, and the background went silent. I heard gurgling. I heard loud thuds, and something cracking.
"No!" I screamed.
I could hear the baby crying in the background. No! "Stay away from my baby!" I screamed into the phone, hoping the intruder could hear me.
The baby stops crying, and I slowly heard footsteps approaching the phone. He killed both of them.....
"Hello." The intruder said. What caught me by surprise was the fact that it was a woman's voice.
"Why are you doing this to my family?" I said as calmly as I could.
"Where is my husband?"
"What?" I said.
"Give the fucking phone to my husband."
I looked over to my hotel bed. Her blonde hair blue eyed husband, naked, stared at me. Guilt in both our eyes.
