Swedish Fish

(True story from a source)

It was Halloween. The most frightening yet fun time of the year. I roamed the streets with my cousins getting candy. The houses were beautifully decorated in a creepy manner. I was in awe. The laughter of children made the night more bearable.

We went to plenty of houses, and collected our goodies. I couldn't wait to go home to eat them. I was starving deep down.

Me, and my cousins passed by this particular house. It was rusty, and looked strangely different from the other houses on the block. The metal gates surrounding the house was slightly ajar as like it was in horror movies.

"Hey we should go there!" One of my cousins suggested.

My stomach turned. Deep inside my brain was telling me it wasn't a good idea. There was clearly reasons why I haven't seen anyone approaching this particular house. They practically skipped over this one, and went to the next in a heartbeat.

"Ah I don't know." I hesitantly said.

"Aw come on!" One of them said as he starts heading towards the house's porch.

I walked slowly behind the group. My heart was thumping. I knew my cousins wouldn't listen to me. What's the point?

One of my cousins starts knocking on the door. My heart began racing even more. What was going to be on the other side of that door? Who will it be? Will we be okay? My gut was screaming to me that something will go terribly wrong. I kept a good distance from my other cousins.

The door slowly creaked opened. An older gentleman came out of the house. His eyes were dark, and his attire wasn't up to par. He had a strange look to him. He smiles. His lips curled up in a creepy manner. "Here, let me get you boys some candy." He smiles, and goes to get us the goodies.

My cousin's awaited anxiously as I stood behind them. I wanted no part of it.

The man walks out with a small dirty looking bowl as he hands out the candy to my cousins. The candy looked kinda old in my opinion, but I knew to stay quiet instead of ruining the excitement for my cousins.

The man gestures me to come over, but I shook my head furiously. I was scared beyond me. I couldn't. Candy didn't seem like a reward at this point. I just wanted to go home.

"Your lost." He says in a creepy raspy deep like manner. He slowly closes the door, and my cousins began running back towards me.

"Let's go!" One of them said, and we resumed our night of trick or treating.

We dumped all our candy on the carpet as we picked out the ones we liked. My cousins, and I all had very similar taste.  We all had a sweet tooth for Swedish Fish. I knew it wasn't the most popular candy, but it sure was good to us.

"Whoa that old creepy guy gave us a bunch of Swedish Fish!" One of my cousins took one. The other cousins seemed to levitate more on chocolate based candies.

"Wait..." I didn't know much at the time since I was young, but I knew when a candy looked funny.

I took the Swedish Fish in my hand, and it looked slightly bizarre. It was one of those individually wrapped ones that had a clear wrapper. The wrapper itself seemed all wrinkled up. Or perhaps, too wrinkled up. I figured it was because the candy was old or the man just squeezed it too hard when handling it.

"Hmm." My thoughts were wrong. Even if the wrapper was all crumbled. The opening at the ends seemed tapered with, like someone was trying to glue it back, and crumbled it up to cover the poor aftermath. The candy was crumbled too. Though the thing that stood out the most was the fact that there was a prominent eye on the Swedish Fish! Normally the eyes would be a solid red just like its entire body, but this one had a gooey caramel looking eye. In fact, the more I stared upon it, the more I realized just how weird it looked. It looked like the fish was injected with some strange caramel colored liquid. I was assuming the injection sight was in the eye.

"I don't think you should eat that." I threw the fish down, and pointed at it.

"Nah it will be fine." He quickly unwraps the fish, and ate it in one gulp. I cringed so badly watching him digest that weird fish.

That night I heard my cousin throwing up, and going to the bathroom constantly. His family had to assist him, and take him to the emergency room. Luckily he is still alive, and well today, but we will never know what was in that candy.....
