3! Is A Job Worth A Lost Friend?
"Are you cold?"
I stopped picking at a loose thread on the blanket around me and looked up at Rex. I managed a small but sincere smile, "Just right."
Rex nods and plops onto the couch next to me, first signs of wariness from the night in his eyes when he turns to look at me again. "Are you okay?"
This time I couldn't even smile when I said, "Not really."
Rex sighed and leaned his head back on the couch. He covered his face with his arms and I could barely make out what he was saying through his arm when he mumbled, "Sorry I didn't get there fast enough."
I barked out a harsh, bitter laugh. "You can't possibly be beating yourself up for something that wasn't even your fault."
Rex shrugged. "I feel like I should always watch out for you, like.. like my little sister."
I ignored the last part. Sister? Was that all I could be to him? I pushed the thought away. It's not like I have feelings for him anyway.
I looked at him. "Rex, you do watch over me. And I try my best to look after you. That's what best friends do."
Rex smiled. "So I'm your best friend, huh?"
I laughed and smacked him on the shoulder. "I thought that was a given."
He winked at me, shooting me a beautiful crooked smile. But then he turned sober and asked, "Can I ask what happened?"
I sighed, suddenly wary. "Which part?"
"Everything." Rex replied.
"I'm pretty sure you got the picture of the last 10 minutes of our date." I answered bitterly.
Rex looked pained, and I wanted to take it back, but I know I couldn't. So I did what he asked and told him, about my crush on Will, how ecstatic I was that he asked me out, and the cold, cruel pain he put me through, pushing me over the edge.
Rex tucked a finger under my chin and made me look at him. I reluctantly did, wincing at all the tender love I found there.
That just makes things more complicated.
"Charlotte." he whispered.
Then, it was like a magnetic pull. We leaned slowly closer to each other, and my breathing started to get shallower as his forehead touched mine.
I closed my eyes and waited for the contact. I felt hot sparks running up and down my body, my nerves tingling. Rex never kissed me before. And he was about to change that, right here right now-
"Hey guys!"
We flew apart, wide eyed, both of us steaming from the heat of our bodies and embarassment. We stared at each other for a second, then both looked away, directing our gazes to the door.
I gasped. Rose Hart and Jagger were standing in the doorway, and they were both obviously very drunk. Shit, if Rose saw me here.. Who knows what could happen to my reputation at school?
Rose was known as the Goth Gossiper. No one wanted to encounter her. I scrambled off the couch and disappeared into the bathroom, leaving poor Rex to clean up two more messes tonight.

"Someone has a secret admirer." Rex teased as we walked up to our lockers.
I punched him playfully. "It's probably the wrong locker."
I reached to take the boquet of 12 roses out of the slots of my locker, but a hand landed on top of mine, stopping me.
"These are from me, declaring my love for you, Charlotte Avery."
