"The news of her death struck the whole school like a meteor. Suddenly every goddamn person seemed to care so much about her, where, not even a day back people didn't even knew who Jenny Gilmour was. They made a whole section for her, to honor her. Like she became a hero or something. And the only noticeable thing she ever did was, well, kill herself. Maybe it was true, 'they only care for the pretty or the dead'."
Lyne pauses. She put one hand inside her pocket to see whether the pills she bought where there or not. They were there.
Suddenly a push from behind startled her, it was Alex, her 'so called best friend'. Apparently he found something funny about Jenny's death.
A ridiculous person he was, but Lyne still befriended him because of his never ending supplies of cigarettes and pot.
Lyne and Alex walked towards to school auditorium, where Monster Lady ( the school principal) would give a speech about how great Jenny was and how her death has brought sorrow in everyone's life.
"Sometimes I wonder why does it ever matter, all these? After the girl died? I mean if they wanted to make her feel good and appreciate her existence, then why couldn't they do it when she was alive? As if her ghost will hear all this shit", Lyne said.
Absent-minded, Alex nodded.
Lyne knew it was of no use, still she stayed in the auditorium. For a moment she felt a bit scared thinking about this, as to how easily these people around her just changed. If it was a few days ago, and Jenny would not have killed herself, no one would even care.
Lyne sighed.
From the Principal's speech it was evident that no one knew the cause of her death. No suicide note, nothing. They said that even her siblings didn't know anything.
For the whole of her life, Lyne thought that suicide was for cowards, she herself had faced troubles, probably worse ones too. She had dozed, smoked, cut, cried, but never even tried to kill herself. This whole thing about killing oneself out of depression really disgusted her. She didn't feel sympathy for Jenny. What she felt was utter disgust.
The speech ended, and she noticed tears in Monster Lady's eyes. She wondered whether Principal even knew who 'Jenny Gilmour' was.
They all walked out the auditorium. The whole corridor was decorated with pictures of Jenny. Flowers, candles, letters and cards and what not. All those girls who had been mean to her through out their lives, sobbed as their 'friend' had died. It felt like Lyne and Alex where the only ones who were giggling.
Alex suddenly asked about the pills Lyne had bought, he said that he had better stuff that would get Lyne higher than ever. Lyne seemed excited. Alex asked her why she even wanted those pills? Like why all those drugs and all? What was she trying to forget or what was she trying to remember?
For a moment Lyne didn't speak a word. The voices of all the students, conversing about Jenny was heard, oh! the concern in their voices.
Lyne just looked at Alex and with a morbid tone said 'myself'.
Alex was blank.
The conversation would have taken a very serious turn if a boy had not intervened.
He gave Lyne a piece of paper and requested her to write something down in the memory of Jenny.
She picked up that paper and very carefully wrote the words 'Goodbye Gilmour', and left.
