The sound of my phone vibrating my entire desk was starting to give me a headache, I put my book down and picked up the phone caller unknown " hello? " I sniffled, "an inmate of The Bradford Prison is requesting to call you, to accept press one" I hit the button, "Sabrina?" Her voice sounded nearly foreign to me, she still had the same sweet southern accent as I remembered except broken, like she'd lost it all, "Rue." My tone was intentionally harsh. "My baby girl" I scoffed, "no." My arms were crossed and my expression emotionless, "I miss you" she sounded so we empty, so alone, and sad, "sorry." This is how she won dad and joseph, "Oh Sabrina, I love you very much and I know I failed you. I was a horrible person and a worse parent. It was my job to keep you safe and protect you and I didn't do that. Baby girl I am so sorry" lies I didn't respond, "your dad says you look like me" yeah before the meth, "I can't wait to see you honey" I can't wait to get off the phone with you oh I can. I hung up "do I have to see her?" My dad isn't exactly a ninja I saw him through the mirror, "yes." He knows this is torture right? "Can Alex stay the night?" He was staring at the top of my head, "yeah but you still have to go to school tomorrow"
Alex tossed her phone on my bed and laid, "so what are you going to say to your mom?" I shrugged, "probably the same as today, not much of anything" she was studying me, waiting for my expression to change. "Your dad is Manuel Javaris Santana right?" I nodded, "he goes by Javar, like the villain in Aladdin" she laughed a little, "creative, bold. I like it" she stood up and walked into my bathroom, "can I straighten your hair?" I stood up, "sure, I've never straightened my hair only other people's" she smiled and plugged it in the wall, "same, I'll do yours and you do mine?" I nodded in agreement and sat down, "so your parents are Rutha Allen and Javar Santana?" I watched as she put half of my hair in a bun on the top of my head, "yeah but I'd trade Rue in for a dog" Alex smirked, "I'm more of a cat person"
