Chapter 38

After talking to Ed and calming him down for a bit, he was finally back to normal. Well, as normal as he can be in this moment. I lied on the sofa with Ed cuddling up to my side with his head on my chest, which he obviously had to compliment on. I laughed it off and just played with his hair while he got calm. All it really took was telling him it was still Shelby's birthday, which resulted in him climbing on top of me, hovering over me with a bright smile as he quickly kissed me.

"Come on, let's go get the princess," Ed exclaimed excitedly, getting off the sofa and pulling me up with him.

We climbed the stairs quietly, not wanting to wake Shelby up beforehand. Ed quietly pushed open her door, revealing a sleeping toddler. I smiled at how precious she looked as Ed wrapped his arm around my torso, guiding me over to her bed. Every time she has a birthday, I feel like it's an accomplishment for me; it means she's survived another year with me and I've done okay. Shelby squirmed around and peeked open eye, rolling back over.

"Wake up, it's your birthday, Honey." Shelby rolled back over, now facing Ed and I. She smiled brightly and stood up in her bed. 

"Birthday!" Shelby cheered excitedly. 

"Yes, you're the Birthday Princess," Ed smiled at her, picking her up and spinning her around. 

I followed Ed out of her room, going downstairs into the living room. Shelby's eyes wandered around the room at the decorations. Ed told her to walk outside, which she happily obliged. Her tiny feet ran outside to all of the other decorations. Shelby's face lit up and I smiled, bending down and giving her a hug. 

"Happy birthday, Babygirl," I smiled. Shelby smiled and gave me a kiss on the cheek, hugging me tightly around the neck. 

"When's my party?" Shelby blurted, putting her hands on her hips. 

"Very sassy just like your mom," Ed perked up from the doorway. I squinted my eyes at him and he laughed, blowing a kiss to me. 

"Nice try," I said, picking up Shelby.

"Sarah, Luke!" I cheered as I opened the door. Luke was carrying a huge box which I assume is Shelby's present. 

"Is this for Shelby?" I asked with wide eyes. They both nodded with smiles on their face. I opened the door wider, letting them in.

"Hey, Luke, what's up mate?" Ed appeared out of nowhere. 

"Hey, where's the birthday girl?" Luke asked, handing Ed the present. 

"In her room, begging to get in the pool already. Hey, sister in-law," Ed joked. Sarah laughed as I lightly hit his chest. 

"We would have to get married first," I said with a smile, resulting in Ed and Sarah laughing. He hugged Sarah, before walking in the kitchen. I began to walk away when I heard another knock at the door. I turned around and opened the door with a smile on my face, seeing Ed's parents. 

"Imogen and John! I'm so happy you're here," I said with excitement. 

"Courtney, please call us mum and dad," Ed's mother, Imogen said hugging me. 

"Ed, Babe, come here." Ed came walking over, hugging his parents tightly. 

"Hi, baby boy," Imogen said with tears in her eyes. 

"Mum."

"Darling, he's a grown man now. He has a daughter," John stated. I smiled as Ed wrapped his arm around my waist. 

"Do you want to come see her?" I asked with a hopeful smile. 

"Oh, of course! I can't wait to spoil her." I laughed at Ed's mum, guiding them upstairs to Shelby's room.
