"Who is this, Rick?" Kate asked trying to be polite. I could tell there was some annoyance in her voice.
"Detective Beckett I assume? I'm Agent Mc'Cauliff, CIA." He reached out to give her a hand shake, and she received, but not without questioning him.
"Why are you here? I mean, why are you at this hospital, I thought you let Richard go."
"We did, only, it seems our young writer has some problems with withholding information, such as the chips in your car were stolen before he got here and, here's a new one, the last remaining chip is in the hospital's bio-hazard waste bin." I tried to read the man. Was he a cold, heartless, uncaring guy like most agents, or was he like both my parents had been, kind hearted, generous, sweet and caring with a major dark side hidden underneath?
This time, I questioned, "Why is the last chip in biohazard?"
The man gave me a look like he was shocked I didn't know, and Kate and Castle gave a look from behind me that when I saw it only made me more curious. The other guy replied, "You didn't know, did you? Just like your mother, she wouldn't have told you. And then to keep your mother's wishes, Agent Haines didn't either. That's semi frustrating, but rather smart of them."
"Didn't tell me what?"
"The last chip, it was in your arm. The one in your locket was in your mother's arm, but when she died, we had to think quickly, and thus, the locket was born. In fact, it was Mary's idea for you to keep it round your neck that way people will think the same thing Mr. Castle and Detective Beckett here did. Why give you two chips? Why not the one? It worked too, obviously." The man was kind of starting to piss me off.
"Well, chip's gone, out of my arm, out of my control. So, you can go get it yourself and leave us along. We didn't do anything as far as I'm concerned except catch your thieves and solve your case. You're welcome." My tude seemed to get some tude back.
"Well, princess, here's the issue. See, that one there killed two men, and this one over here didn't follow her Captain's orders and is probably getting fired. You, however, are the only one not in trouble. So, I've arranged a car to take you to foster care while these two come down to the station, and Mr. Castle spends his next twenty years in jail and Detective Beckett loses her job."
"What?!" Kate was a little less pissed and more freaked.
"No. No, we had a deal. You said I was free to go. You said these guys were on CIA's list. You dropped the charges, you can't charge me again."
"Oh, on the contrary Mr. Castle, I can and I will. Looks like its jail for you." He said with a smug laugh.
"Let me at least take Kris home with me." Kate insisted.
"Alright, Detective. I believe your Captain could use some cooling off anyway." The man glanced at Kate and then me. Actually, it was the two of them, and then me. "You're lucky kid."
"Thanks?" I wasn't sure what he meant by that, but I went with it.
"Now, Mr. Castle, come with me. Your girlfriend and Kris may go." He wrapped his arms from Kate's hip.
"Fiancé, she's my fiancé."
"I doubt she's anything to a jail boy." The agent approached Castle and cuffed his hands behind his back. More than anything I wanted to punch the guy in the mouth maybe knock out a tooth or two, but I let it go. Kate put her hands on my shoulders and guided me towards the car. She left me in the back seat since the front was covered in blood.
"Sorry about that."
"Sorry about what? Bleeding? Hey, they're leather seats. You're fine, you're only human. Blood is blood, it happens. This car's been through worse." She was smiling at me in the rear view mirror a moment as I buckled up and then focused on the road as she told her story.
