"It seems like her short term memory is fine, and her long term is something I'd need for you to test. She knows her name though, correct?" The doctor turned to Kate.
"Yes. Yes, she knows her past too, but not every part of it. It seems like she completely forgot she was, umm, trained- in combat. Also she seems to have shot Rick and me out of her memory along with everything that happened before the accident. Actually, she seems to believe everything she believed when she first came to us. One of those things being she wasn't- trained, along with her mother being alive, her mother not being her biological mother, and only knowing of her father's and brother's deaths." Kate never looked into the doctor's eyes. She maintained a worried mother's pose, keeping one arm across her chest, the other hand to her mouth, resting the bottom of that arm on her other and bouncing up and down slightly from the single bouncing leg as her eyes stayed to the floor or to her daughter's hospital room.
"Was she suffering from a head injury when she was first with you?"
"Not that we could tell, but then again, we never got her checked."
Seeing the nervousness coupled with the twinge of guilt in Kate's answer, the doctor did her best to reassure Kate. "You know, I thought you were her mom."
"What?"
"In there. I thought you were her mom. If I had had to guess, and I did, I would have called you her mom. Also, I never would have guessed that she'd only known you for three days and didn't remember any of them. And considering you've only known her three days, you guys haven't done a bad job of keeping her safe. It sounds to me like she's lucky to have you."
Kate rolled her eyes, "Lucky to have us? Yeah right. Look at what's happened in the last three days. Her mother was murdered, she wrote practically suicidal poetry and a paper, she was kidnapped, she nearly bled to death, she nearly bled to death again, she stabbed herself and now, to top it all off, we didn't know she has a possible brain injury."
"Wouldn't that happened whether you were there or not? I mean, in my opinion, you should look at it as you were there for her the whole time. You saved her life more than once. If I were you, I'd look at it that way."
This statement brought a smile to Kate's lips for a split moment before she refocused to her daughter's health. "What- what do you need to do for her? I mean, what's the next step?"
"Well, we need to get an MRI to see what this really is and then we will go from there. I'll just need you to fill out some forms for me and I'll need to also run some blood work."
"Alright. Yeah, sure. What kind of paper work?"
"Mostly just forms she doesn't already have. She doesn't have any medical files since Julia became Kris, so we'll need for someone to fill them out."
Kate shook her head, "I- I don't know her medical history. I don't know anything other than things that have happened in the last three days."
"Well, who should I give the papers to?"
"I- I'll give them to Rick's dad. Maybe someone at the- training facility- knows these things." The woman nodded and began to walk away. Kate added a, "Thank you," and she gave a wave of acknowledgement in return. Well, this was an interesting day. Castle came up behind her, alone. "Why aren't you in there with Kris?"
"She kicked me out when the doctor asked her about her father's and brother's deaths. I know she doesn't know I already know about it, but it stung." He kept his arms at his sides, gesturing slightly outward toward Kate.
She couldn't not look inside the room threw the glass, but when she did, she didn't see anything but the two talking. "You know, I feel like- I feel like she's hiding something. Like I wonder if she really does remember. I mean, I hope she doesn't, but I wonder if she does."
