Castle stayed silent, pretending to not notice the morning's issues. As he and Kate got dressed and readied themselves for the day, Richard found himself in the same train of thought that Kate had tossed and turned about all night. She didn't eat breakfast and took decaf coffee, even with her extreme fatigue. Messages from Laynie lit up Kate's phone, as did the messages from Alexis and Martha. Her father even sent one in to her. Martha and Alexis must have told him about the test. She decided to pretend for now that this was completely unrelated.
On the drive over, Castle continued to research things on his phone, but not about anything close to the day's activities. "Kate, we have to get married."
"Rick, we're engaged. You know that, right?" Beckett was just thrilled he didn't ask about the decaf and no breakfast.
"No, I mean we can't adopt Kris until we're married. We have to get married if we want her to come home with us. We have to get married," Rick was serious. His eyes, his attitude and his heart reflected and held onto the determination in his voice and the truth behind it all.
She thought a moment, "Are you sure?"
"Well, I mean, it increases our chances greatly. And even with you and I both having steady jobs, a steady income, being good people with an older criminal record, a steady relationship and a decent amount of money, considering the fact that you and I both put our lives on the line on a daily basis and she's lost so many people, if we can do anything to make even the slightest difference that's in out favor, I think we should. I think we should get married. Just you, me, my mother and your father at the court house." There wasn't a doubt in his mind Kate would be fine with this. She'd said from day one that the wedding was the problem, not being his wife, and this was an understandable reason to completely avoid the issue.
He never expected this, "I- only in law. I want a real Church wedding. I- I want to wear the white dress, be walked down the isle, and write our own vows in front of my whole family and all of our friends."
"Really? I thought you'd jump to get out of that. I guess I figured you'd like the idea of being fully understood for not doing that," Richard was more surprised she just didn't want to get this done and over with, out of the way and inexpensively. "And maybe instead of the courthouse with our parents, we go to the courthouse alone and tell no one. It'll be like our own little secret wedding."
Richard smiled at the idea, loving the idea of a secret wedding. It was something he had always thought would be fun, "Why Katherine, do I sense a small bit of wild child showing in you."
"Why Richard, I believe you are correct. So what do you say? Will you be the boy I run away with?" She smiled as she teased him.
"Always." He teased back, "So long as I get to be the husband and you get to be my wife." The couple shared smiles and giggles. This was what he loved about being around her. Every moment was another ounce of love for her that filled his heart. His family, his friends, his whole world was a world he built that centered around his daughters and his wife. It was his heaven, his paradise his whole world and his saving song of joy.
But his world seemed to be balancing on a thin wire and tipping from side to side. His daughter's past year, his past six years with Beckett, the last three days with Kris and the new courses of his life. Not to mention the day to day dramas that were less than easy. Such as the ex-wife staying at his place issue or the CD that was going to kill him and Beckett thing. But also the strain on the relationship between him and Kate since the proposal or the adjustments from Alexis not being around. These were the many issues that he faced, but didn't so much deal with that would cause most of the problems of the balance in his world.
It seemed to him, however, that nothing horrible could happen, so long as he was with her and he still had his girls. No matter how bleak the outlook, no matter how offal the day, as long as he had his two kids and his wife, everything would be alright.
