As I walked back from getting my schedule, I saw Delaney's face smiling back at me, but, suddenly, I wished it was Alison's. She ripped open the scab on my heart just as it was healing over. And, from my experience with Alison, I know I didn't even mean a thing to her.

"Sweetie, are you okay," Delaney asked me.

"Yea, I'm fine."

"So," she said, moving her body to face mine, "are we going to talk about what happened earlier? Outside?"

"Just an old friend... that's all."

"You wanna talk about her," Delaney asked.

"That was Alison, Alison DiLaurentis. The girl from the news."

"You never told me that you were friends with her! Well, you should probably go spend some time with her, she seems pretty alone."

"She's the last person I want to talk to right now."

Just as Delaney began to dig too deep, they called her for her schedule. Her name was towards the end of the alphabet, so it was almost time to go to our first-period classes. I had study hall first period, in the cafeteria. Delaney came back shortly, and we compared schedules, and then I let her know I was heading to the cafeteria.

Upon my arrival, I saw a far too familiar face, that of Alison. She was sitting alone at a table, writing in a notebook. When she looked up, she saw me and called out my name. "Emily," she said, motioning for me to come to her. I wasn't really close friends with anyone in first-period study hall, so I decided to sit with her, but I kept my guards up.

"How did schedule calling go," she asked, chipper as always.

"Good, good. I would have been here sooner, but I waited around for my girlfriend to get her schedule."

"Oh, so that's who the mystery girl is."

"Yea, her name's Delaney. She transferred here at the beginning of last year."

"Pretty name. So, when did everyone else leave?"

"Well, you kind of fucked us all up, all of our friends. Aria left almost immediately. She was a wreck while she was here, but I've heard she's been getting better. Our moms still talk. Then the Hastings, because Mrs. H supposedly got a nicer job in DC. Hanna was the last. She left this summer."

"Oh," Alison said, and I could tell she was hurt, but it was the truth. "Listen, everything I did, it was never to hurt you, Emily. That's the last thing I would have wanted. Believe me." I should have stayed quiet, but I was already riled up.

"Ali, I cared about you. And you went out of your way to prove that you did not care about me."

"You're the one I've cared about the most," Ali said, reaching over and holding my hand. "Why don't you sign out of study to meet me in the bathroom upstairs?"

"I'm dating Delaney, Ali. You can't just come back and expect me to go back to being your secret, not after all the time it took me to get over it the first time."

Ali went silent for a little while. "Are you happy with her," she asked in a quiet voice, looking up from her notebook.

I nodded. "You'll always be my first Ali. But you can't expect to be my last love. If you wanted me to trust you, you shouldn't have left."

"It wasn't my choice. I missed you like crazy. Really."

I sat there quietly for a moment. "I think I'm going to go to the bathroom." Ali nodded.

Once I got there, I looked at myself in the mirror after washing my face. I'm only going to be in Rosewood for another few months. Someone who I once considered the love of my life has returned and is trying to get back together with me. Why am I letting someone I don't even like that much get in the way of that? Before I could even answer that question, Alison opened the bathroom door, pushed me against the sink, and kissed me.
