Chapter 1
I wait in the shadows, the grey, shadowy light of the abandoned factory illuminating my face. Covered by darkness, I sit atop one of the huge machines that once upon a time dominated this once-thriving place. I am not one for cars, but what I think is a long-forgotten bonnet sits on the concrete floor of the factory. I wonder what this place would have looked like ten, fifteen years ago, at the height of this company's existence. Bustling workers, clanking heavy machines. Employees lifting up parts needed around the place...
"THEA! Where are you?" My best friend Haylee shouts at the entrance
"Over here, on top of one of these weird machines!" I shout. I grin. This is one of our 'expeditions into the unknown', as Haylee likes to call them. We explore previously forgotten areas, for fun, leaving behind the knowledge of another once-thriving place.
I slide off the smooth, curved edge of the metal, and run over to Haylee and sweep her into a bear hug, unbeknownst to her. She gasps in surprise at my sudden appearance, her strange gold-hazel eyes alive and shining in the torchlight.
"Ready to go exploring?" I ask, grinning, releasing her and holding out a huge flashlight.
"I always am", she says, and smiles widely.
We set off into the unknown factory, Haylee never out of my line of sight. Through the broken windows the full moon shone, the rays reflecting off the surrounding rusted steel. The air was musty with the smell of old leather. Shadows danced around us, as the wind gusted through the building. I smiled. Perfect conditions to explore in.
Then I heard a scream. A screechy, deafening sound that would give anyone a headache. I panicked: running around, trying to find where it was coming from.
I didn't notice the glass until I tripped, although I swear it felt like a push.
I screamed as the glass pierced through my bare hands. My jeans and jacket softened the blow to my knees, though the sharp and sudden pain in my legs is excruciating me, and not letting me get up. I am surrounded by a pool of blood, glass everywhere. Haylee is squirming a few metres away, a black, shadowy shape looming in front of her. She screams as it continues to lunge at her, and cries out in agony as I hear the sickening sound of bone cracking. I shout out in hysterics in pain and for the safety of my best friend. The figure stops, and turns around. I quickly try to heave myself up from the glass and blood.
Then I see a blur of curly black hair, the moon reflecting off of metal. I am pinned to the ground, face down, bewildered, the glass piercing my face, and yet more blood flows out.
"This is what you get, Black Angel, for being an impostor among this world." The someone, no, something, with a deep, raspy and inhuman voice that is holding me down. "My name is Rynan Vontril, famed Black Angel slayer, and I hold no mercy against sympathisers such as you."
"What on earth are you talking about?" I shout, confused, shocked at that the evil-sounding words black and impostor that this thing is describing me as. I continued to struggle and squirm.
"You don't know? Well, it's such a shame you'll never find out now."
He lifted the gleaming blade. I screamed.
Suddenly, with an unexplained strength, I thrust him off of me and was stunned by what I saw when I turned around. His short curly, jet-black hair was invisible in the darkness. He got up, and that was when I saw a hint of feathers coming out of his back. What?!
He charged. I ran around, hoping to escape his deadly wrath. At an inhumanly speed, I rush around the room, Rynan's eyes seeming to go in circles. I was shocked at my sudden abilities, and I knew that no ordinary human could go this fast, even on steroids. That's when the he flew up into the air. I wasn't even concentrating, I was terrified and so suddenly I appeared with these inhuman abilities. What was going on?
