Chapter 5

"Grab that softball bat," I said, "and there should be a few smokebombs under the bed." I just happened to be fascinated by smokebombs. Arian gave me a confused look, but walked over to the bed obediently, taking out the box in which they had sat in for the past two years or more.

"Why do you just 'happen' to have these?" He asked, the confused and bewildered look o his face still remaining.

"I have absolutely no idea, I just 'happen' to have them because of a very strange fascination with them a few years back." I said. "Now, MOVE! Whatever is in the house, it is coming towards us, ready to strike at any moment. It may have injured or even killed my family. Get under the bed, or we may have to go out the window."

A bang was heard from outside the door. Oh, shit, I thought. I had not even locked the door. The steel hinges of the door rattled, and a screeching noise was heard.

"RUN!" I shout to Arian, who, seemingly had stood there the whole time, oblivious to the world. He seemed to be in shock. Snapping out of his daze, he ran towards the window, smashing the glass into smithereens with the not-so-soft softball bat. Stepping out, he stepped onto the lawn, since my bedroom was at the front of the house, me not far behind him. We ran out onto the deserted road, about twenty metres from the broken window. He grabbed my hand.

"Use your wings to fly!" He shouted. I hesitated. Stop, you are in grave danger, save yourself and find your courage. Shaking my shoulders, I heard a bang coming from my bedroom. The creature shrieked.

"Come on then!" I shouted. I looked back. A black creature, with horns and fangs, had burst through the unlocked door and looked up to see us. It was coming fast towards me and Arian, and had its fangs bared.

"Go NOW! That is a Trakie! They are the pets of Golden Angels, rare and bred specifically for hunting Black Angels like us down!" Arian shouted.

"NO! I must find out what has happened to my family!" I restrained against Arian's grip; it was as if he had chained me. I struggled and squirmed as he pulled me into the air. "STOP! Zelia! Mum!" I shouted hysterically. There was no sound coming from the house, only the shrieking of the awful Trakie. It seemed to be crying out in frustration. No Black Angels to kill today, only a demon, and a half-demon who still had no idea about her past. Maybe they had gotten away... my mother would defend her children to the end. The thought comforted me as I continued struggling against Arian's iron grip.

Spreading my wings as fast as possible, I finally got it into my head that I wasn't going anywhere. I stopped struggling, and got the first proper look at mine and Arian's wings. Mine were shimmering black, with sparkles that looked like glitter shimmering in the afternoon sunlight. Arian's were shimmering gold, looking spectacular in the sunlight. But now was not the time to admire our wings. Suspended in the air, I grabbed Arian's hand. I was new to the sensation of flying, and I didn't know what to do or even how to fly. He would have to be my very good-looking guide. He gave me a sympathetic look as he looked back at me over his shoulder.

"We will come back later." Arian said. "And check out the extent of damage the creature had done to your house."

"OK," I said. My heart lurched when I remembered my family, stuck inside the house with that weird creature. We started to fly away from the house, the creature turning around in circles and shrieking in the distance. I looked down at it as it got further away. The world seemed so small from up above, the houses looking like toys and the people like marching ants. They seemed to not be noticing any beings flying high above them... we were probably high enough that we looked like birds. The sun was setting in the distance, the dusk light making everything seem gold in colour. The last of the inhuman shrieks fell behind us as we moved at speed, Arian leading the way the whole time. It is a wonder the neighbours hadn't notice anything strange... I mean, a random though very-hot guy standing outside my window unfurling his golden, shimmering wings in the middle of the day. Not to mention the weird creature that had maybe torn apart my family. Why had it attacked us? Why tear us apart now...
