Chapter 3
Hidden by the darkness, I run down the street to my house. Only two hours ago I had set out to just go exploring with my best friend, not expecting something like this is happen tonight. Haylee breaking her leg, being attacked, having strange abilities. Using my new abilities, I ran home at superhuman speed, my neighbours not suspecting a thing. When I arrive at the path that leads to my house, I hesitate. What would I tell Mum? I'll tell her when we wake up, I thought.
Walking to the side of the house, I climbed into my open window, my room seemingly glowing in the darkness. My nightlight from when I was a little kid was still on in the corner. I had turned it on to make it easier to see in my room when I got home. Shutting the window as quietly as I could, I then climbed into bed, waiting for sleep to overcome me.
...
Waking up with a start, my mother, Catalina and my nine-year-old sister Zelia sat on my bed, both having wide, giddy smile on their faces.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY THEA!" They shouted, so loud she was bound to wake the neighbours. Mum had a beautifully wrapped present sitting on her lap. I groaned, groggy from sleep and my mind whizzing from the events of last night. Sarah obviously had not yet contacted Mum about the events and injuries of last night. I had even forgotten it was my birthday. To be honest, I really hated my birthday. Being the centre of attention, being forced to eat a lot of food, when all I wanted was to curl up in my room and watch movies on my TV or read a good book...
"Come on, Thea, we want to see you open your present." Zelia whined. She just wanted to rush through the opening of the presents so she could have the delicious meal and then through to the cake. She was nine years old, after all. What nine-year-old didn't like cake?
"Zelia, shut up, will you? I'll open it later. In fact, why don't you go into the kitchen and help yourself to a piece of cake? I have to talk to Mum in private." I said. Zelia forgot her impatience, and happily went out of the room, looking for the cake. I sat up, and she closed the door behind her quietly. She seemed to understand that we wanted to talk privately. I whipped my blond-gold hair so I could talk to Mum, her face a flurry of worry. I took a deep breath.
"Mum, last night something happened that has seriously changed me." I could sense that her heartbeat had quickly risen.
"What happened, dear?" She asked, her voice high, maybe a little over-rehearsed.
"When I was exploring with Haylee, we were attacked. Haylee's leg was broken. Not just any ordinary mugging though, we were attacked by what is known as a Golden Angel. I suppose you have something to say for yourself, knowing that since I was seventeen, I would soon be having heightened agility and sudden wings? Were you ever going to tell me that you were a demon, or an Angel? I don't know which one you are, but lasts night's events, with sudden superhuman abilities, I was a Black Angel. Zelia is at least half-demon or half-angel. I saw things last night. A Golden Angel named Rynan Vontril attacked us", I finished, satisfied with my little speech.
Mum's face went pale. "You...you... you were attacked? And then your abilities appeared?" She stammered. She took a breath, and cleared her throat. "I am a demon, your father a Golden Angel. I was banished to the human realm when I was your age, after the demons finding that I was pregnant from a Golden Angel. I ended up having you, and Zelia is your half-sister. Her father is a human, and he disappeared shortly after she was born. She is half-human, so she will have agility like you, and will stay looking like a human, only having demon abilities. I desperately hoped against hope you would turn out to be an ordinary human, which is known to happen, although rarely, with some Black Angels. But that appears to not be the case." She grinned weakly, her eyes tearing up. "You are in grave danger now. I am surprised that you managed to escape Rynan. Even the demons had heard of him. He had slayed hundreds of Black Angels, some even being innocent children who had no idea about their abilities." The tears were coming on fully now.
