Chapter 2

Once the bright, welcoming lights of the local hospital came into view, I slowed down into walking pace. Arian landed in front of me, straight away folding his magnificent silver wings away, making my heart skip a beat. I had forgotten he was there, always above me, watching my every move.

"Now," he said, "They are going to ask for her personal details and what happened. Tell them that you were exploring around the industrial area, when she fell and landed on her left leg awkwardly. They'll need personal details, which I am sure you can provide to them."

I nodded, nervous. What would I tell them?

"Well, I am going now, I can't risk them seeing my wings." He then suddenly pulled me into an embrace, and I blushed. Thanks goodness it was dark, otherwise I would have been humiliated by the bright red on my cheeks. He let go, waving. He once again spread his wings, blowing wind in my face. I exasperated a sigh. Then he disappeared.

...

Haylee stirred on the bench, tears of pain running down her cheeks.

"It's going to be OK, Hays," I said, at least trying to comfort her. "I am going to pick you up now, and it may hurt." I picked her up, Haylee crying out in agony.

"STOP! Put me down! God, that hurts!" She cried out. I gritted my teeth as she squirmed under my grasp. I carried her through the door to the emergency room, a bored-looking nurse sitting at the reception. She only looked mildly interested as we walked up to the counter.

"We need a wheelchair and urgent medical attention. NOW." I said out in desperation. "My friend here has a broken leg, broken in multiple places." She looked up in boredom.

"Name, age, and we need to call her parents. You cannot provide anything. We will not provide any assistance until they arrive or give their proof of identification and insurance." Se sighed, looking down and going back to whatever she was doing. This woman was getting on my nerves. I took a deep breath.

"Listen you, this girl I have in my arms, crying out from the pain? Her name is Haylee Fletcher. She is seventeen years old, born March 25th 1999. She fell badly onto her leg in the nearby industrial area, in which we were exploring in. You can contact her parents through this number..." I recited her mum's number, which I knew by heart, since I had called her so many times over the years, and the receptionist glared at me. At my inconvenience as I interrupted her from her book. Obediently, she picked up the phone, still keeping her eyes on me. I don't know why, she looked ridiculous rather than intimidating, which was what she was probably trying to achieve. So, annoyed, I decided to glare back. It turned into an epic staring contest. And then Haylee's mum Sarah answered the phone.

"Sarah Fletcher? This is Freya Martin from the county hospital. Your daughter, Haylee Martin, has had a bad fall when exploring with her friend in the local industrial area tonight. We apologise for the late hour, but you must come now and give your consent."

I could hear a gasp and scream coming from the other end of the phone. I placed the body of Haylee onto a nearby wheelchair, and she looked up at me, smiling weakly.

"Thank you." She said. "What happened to me? I don't remember much, but I remember something baring down on my leg. I didn't really have a bad fall in the car factory, did I?"

I hesitated. Did I really want to tell her? It might put her in danger, after all, Rynan HAD attacked her first, probably initially thinking that she was his target, rather than the unfortunate me who was the real target. I grimaced, Haylee looking up at me expectantly.

"Well?" She asked, her eyes filling up with fear. She knew I was hiding something. I took a deep breath.

"Before you passed out, you were attacked by an angel. A Golden Angel, who knows about what I really am."

Haylee's eyes were showing her true fear and worry for me. "What do you mean, 'what I really am'?" Her mouth was a grim line.

"I am a Black Angel, and I am not human, though I have honestly no idea what. The Golden Angels hate us, I have no idea why though. I'm scared too, and I know you may not believe me, but why else would have been attacked by a creature that can fly?"

"I honestly have no idea." Haylee said, her eyes still alight with worry.

"Um, excuse me, Haylee Fletcher? Your mummy will be here in ten minutes. To help ease the pain, would you like some painkillers?" Freya, the 'intimidating' receptionist said in a high-up voice that is usually used for kids, I don't know, age three? She Sneaked me another glare. I just rolled my eyes at the action. She looked and sounded so ridiculous it was almost funny.

"Yes, please." Haylee said. I looked around. It was 2am, and nobody was around in the ER waiting room at this hour in the morning. There was an eerie silence that surrounded the room, making it quite creepy.

Ten minutes of silence and just sitting around later, I heard footsteps. I suspected it was Sarah, Haylee's mum, ready for her to receive treatment for her leg. I stood up. Sarah, a beautiful, surprisingly young-looking person walked around the corner, her ballet flats going slip-slap on the linoleum floors. She ran over to Haylee, her arms outstretched, tears of worry streaking down her face. "Haylee! Oh, my darling, I was so worried." Haylee's chestnut-brown hair whipped around at the mention of her name. Her mum hugged her a huge bear hug, Haylee groaning under the effort of reaching up to her mum. Sarah released her and then saying something to the receptionist that I couldn't hear.

She turned to me. "Thank you, thank you, for bringing my daughter to safety. If she had been on her own, like she sometimes is, I don't want to even think about what could have happened to her." She hugged me, and then saying to the receptionist if they could please take Haylee away to have an X-ray or whatever they needed to do, really.

"Please, go home, we will contact you when you wake up, to tell you how Haylee is doing." She beckoned towards the exit. "And thank you yet again, for getting her here safely. She smiled, and I started on my way out the door, leaving behind the place where my journey and heartache had really began.
