Visions.
Dreams.
This was all he saw. The terrible pasts that had come before his time.
Death.
Destruction.
These were the dreams of a child.
Suddenly, he was awoken by the sound of an explosion and a roaring screech. He saw his sisters, huddled together against the wall of the cave of trash and debris, holding their baby brother close and trying to keep him from crying. There was fighting going on outside, the boy could tell, but the fighting sounded like many people. A war?
The boy crawled over to his younger siblings, who were terrified by the sounds of the battle outside. The opening to the cave had collapsed just the day before, so the air was getting hard to breathe. Screaming was heard, and the children all knew that the dragon had struck.
The fighting continued for a while before it seemed that dragon had been weakened. Someone was chanting something, and after they finished, the dragon screeched its last, and the sound slowly faded. The battling was over.
Suddenly, the roof of the cave and light flooded the small hole. A young man stood over them, and reached down.
"Come on," the boy said to his siblings. "We can escape!" The young girls started shedding tears of fear and relief. The baby was quiet and soon fell asleep.
Once everyone was out, the man introduced himself.
"My name is Ventar," he told them. "What are your names?"
"My name's Jordan," the boy introduced, voice still shaking. "These are my sisters, Cierra and Bethany, and our little brother, Isaac." Ventar smiled gently.
"There's no need to fear any longer," assured them. "Come with me, and we'll find your parents."
"I wish we could," Jordan said, sadly, trying not to break into tears.
"Why can't we find them?"
"They died to the dragon, trying to protect us," Cierra replied for Jordan since he had already broken into sobbing, grieving their loss. Their parents had died right before they got trapped in the rubble of what had once been their home.
Ventar had a troubled look on his face. A look of despair for what happened to this poor family.
"Still," he decided. "Come with me, and I'll bring to my people. I am the Caller of a race known as the Mountain Cows. I'm their leader."
"If you're a Mountain Cow, then why do you look human?" Jordan pondered, still wiping tears off his cheeks.
"I have the power to become a human, but I am really a Mountain Cow in human form." Ventar answered.
Without any more questions, Jordan signaled for his sisters to follow, and the five of them walked off with the rest of the Mountain Cows.
Many Years Later:
Jordan stood on the clifftop overlooking the night-darkened landscape, his heart and mind at peace. Closing his eyes, he took a long breath of clean air, and relaxed his muscles.
How long had it been since he was a scared child in the Fallout? He had lost count of the years. Part of him felt isolated in his emotion, with no one to relieve him of his old memories, that haunted him to this day. He remembered how he and his siblings had been rescued by his mentor, Ventar, caller of the Mountain Cows, who remained as leader, when Jordan was supposed to be the heir, but Jordan couldn't bear the thought of commanding armies. He had a fear of becoming too powerful, which he knew would one day lead to his demise.
Venturian. He thought of the warrior's name he was given, to symbolize his bravery. The name carried with it, a responsibility. When he refused to take leadership, Ventar decided that it would be safer for him to live with his siblings in almost complete isolation. Of course, they were still a part of the Mountain Cow Empire, but Venturian had become his own leader. He needed to lead his siblings, so they didn't lead themselves into darkness. This was the destiny he chose.
