"Im not sure whats happening with you, but if you want to wait then we can do that." Roberta says, following me out into the hall.
I shake my head. "I.. I cant be in the same room with him. I cant speak in front of him. Is there any way that we can do this without me having to be around him?" I ask.
"Unfortunately there is no way around it." She says.
I fold my arms, keeping them from shaking so much.
"You dont have to do this today." She says, reasoning with me.
"If I dont do it today, then I will have to do it tomorrow or the next day. I just... I want you to do all of the talking." I say, desperately.
"I will, but you have to tell them why you filed for divorce." She explains.
I take a deep breath and nod. "Okay."
We walk back inside and I force myself to avoid Michael's gaze. It hurts me to divert my eyes, but I have to give my testimony.
"I filed for divorce because of adultery, physical, mental and emotional abuse, and endangerment." I say quietly, my lip quivering.
"Now we can get started." Attorney Somers says.
My hands are shaking so badly I have to put them in my lap so no one can see them. My chest is hurting from my nerves. Im afraid. Im sitting in a room surrounded by lawyers, but I am completely and utterly scared. The crazy part is that I dont know what I am scared of. It's not like Michael can do anything to me at this point.
"My client wants a clean break. No communication, no joint accounts, no children so that shouldnt be a problem right?" Roberta says, taking out her papers.
"It seems simple enough. Give me a moment to look over the marriage licenses." Attorney Somers says, putting his glasses on.
"Good. Then we can divvy everything up." Roberta says.
I didnt even think about divvying anything up and she never discussed this with me. Attorney Somers looks at her over his glasses.
"Divvy? That is not an option." He says.
"If you would have read the marriage license before arriving you would have noticed that there were no prenuptial agreements signed and/or added to the licenses. Therefore, we have the right to divvy anything and everything up between the two of them." Roberta says, clasping her hands together.
Attorney Somers takes a moment to read over the license and give Michael an angry look.
"No prenup? Are you kidding me?" He says, frowning.
"We got married in a chapel a week after we met each other. I didnt really find time to go over everything with you. It was fast, but I never thought I would be getting a divorce." Michael says and I can feel his eyes on me again, but I dont look up.
"That would have protected you. You would not have had to go through this process at all." Somers explains.
"Like I said, we got married really quick." Michael says, not wanting to continue the conversation.
"Well, I suppose it is time to divvy everything up. Even though we both know nothing belongs to your client, not even the nice clothes on her back." Somers says, pissed Michael didnt get a prenup.
I look up at Attorney Somers and he is scowling at me. What did I do? Sorry for hiring a great lawyer, but this is what I had to do. Michael forced my hand.
"I bought these clothes with my own money. The little bit of money that I do have." I say, buttoning my blazer.
"You dont have to say another word to either of them, they are trying to intimidate you and guilt you into accepting the bare minimum, but need I remind both of them that the only ones with the advantage here is us." Roberta says, glaring at Somers.
