I'm his book 'The Kill Order' James Dashner made a reality where the world was hit by sun flares. And in his story the equator was most affected. In reality unless it was a Nova nothing would get through Earths electromagnetic field. And if it DID get to earth it would effect the 'caps' the most and the equator the least.
