I tend to forget what these cities used to look like. It's like a ghost town now, large abandoned cities that were once filled with people, now just crumble to nothingness, letting nature take its course. Everything seemed to fade as the days went on, slowly taking whatever was left of humanity with it.
We drew closer with each step to the city. I didn't feel scared anymore about entering the city, there was nothing to be afraid of anymore it felt like. We've survived everything that's been thrown at us, we had nothing else to loose except ourselves. We passed a rusted sign that read "Now entering Boston". Boston? I had lost track of where we were a long time ago, we had just been drifting this whole time and somehow ended up here.
"This place looks like it's seen better days." Amber exclaimed to us as we walked through the empty streets.
"Ever wonder how much longer those building are gonna stay? I'm always scared there gonna fall right on top of us." She had smiled whilst pointing the the towering dilapidated buildings that dominated the fading skyline of the city.
"Well, if they ever fall lets just hope it takes out some infected for us." I replied jokingly. She gave a slight glare and then turned away. Here we were joking about the collapse of cities, and the killing of infected. Oh, how normal it became.
Drake led us to a empty street filled with ruined shops and and overgrown buildings. I saw nothing that stood out to me, it seemed everywhere we went everything started to look the same. The same overgrown buildings, the same empty cities, and no one to ever be seen. It made you feel really alone sometimes, being the only living person in a huge city that was once teeming with life. Even though it had been a few years since the outbreak, it's still felt strange. Everyday, I always feel like I'm supposed to wake up and go to that 9-5 job and then come home and go out, and just live a "normal" life of a 24 year old, but I guess that was too much to ask for.
"Hey, let's go check the pharmacy down the street, they'll have something-hopefully." Drake had assured. He pointed to a small pharmacy next to what looked like had once been a book store. "Weston's Pharmacy" a partiality covered up sign had read. We walked up to the shattered windows and broken door and walked inside.
The inside of the store had reeked of mold, after being exposed to the elements for quite sometime now. I didn't know how much would be salvageable due to the store looking like a bomb had gone off.
"Ugh, let's hurry up and get out of this shithole, alright?" Amber coughed.
"Well, I can't assure you well get much, people ripped this place apart a long time ago." I replied back to her as I walked up and the isles searching for anything that might look usable. The shelves were mostly torn down and anything that seemed to remain was either water damaged or empty. I saw what looked like a pill bottle, it never hurt to grab medicine whenever you found it, most people had raided the pharmacies first when everything went to hell, so why Drake thought it was a good idea to look here was beyond me. I walked over and pulled the cap of the pill bottle and pulled it out from underneath its prison of the fallen shelves, only to find that it was completely empty.
"So you just took all the pills and left the fucking bottle?" I questioned myself. "Damn people really did go crazy."
"Hey! I found something you might like!" I heard Drake yell from across the store. Amber and I rushed over to him only to see he had found an old-partially used first aid kit.
"It's not much, but it's something." Drake assured.
"Is that all, I didn't find anything except some old rags. Anything?" She asked as she turned to me.
"Nope. Found an empty pill bottle if you want that." I asked her jokingly.
"Oh har-har." She replied to me sarcastically.
