"What is going on here?"the Lord Protector demanded.
Kashara gulped. She was no mage seer but even she could forsee that was she in deep trouble now.
Silence greeted the harsh ruler of Erth. He frowned and the lordly courtiers trembled delicately.
"WHO is this girl here?" He demanded. Syphill took a step forward careful to keep her eyes averted in respect.
"Begging your pardon! She's the sister of the court scribe, come to fetch her brother...." she hesitantly drifted of in mid sentence as the Lord Protector's eyes widened in unmistakable anger. Syphill might be strict and overbearing but in Erth even an enemy wouldn't wish the wrath of the Lord Protector upon you.
" You mean tell me she is not a mage?" His voice was deadly low and quiet. Kashara gulped again.
"How dare you set your lowly foot into the Institution knowing you were never allowed in here? You will be punished for this!" He now spoke to her directly the venom and vengance poisoning his breath and words.
At those words two guards who had mysteriously blended into the walls leapt forward and grabbed her arms. Mageling soliders..Kashara thought bitterly.
"Gather the people, I will make an example out of her!" the Lord said coldly. As the soliders effortlessly pulled her along behing the him the protests of her brother bounced off the corridors ringing in her ears.
They reached the courtyard outside the Institution. A place for the Protector to inflict his power on helpless beings and to control the masses. The crowd had already gathered before the pulpit anxiously awaiting the Protector. When it came to following direct imperial orders the people had a special prowess.
It was obvious not everyone in the Capital City of Erth, Kaputis had gathered but the Protector must have thought they were enough to ensure the message would spread. Kashara scanned the crowd and her eyes widened when she saw Mariset looking worriedly at her. She must have heard a girl had been captured and knew it was her. She tried to give a small encouraging smile to Mariset but failed terribly due to the fact that perhaps she was also frightened.
"Tie her to the tree!" He commanded imperiously. Kashara tried to quell the rising panic as a soldier manhandled her to the tree and tied her tightly to it.
"Bring forth the whips!"
Kashara shut her eyes as tears threatened to fall. Whips were the most terrifying of all punishment . They left the victim a bloody mess with broken bones and barbs stuck to their skin. Some people never healed again and in the worst cases the victims died tied to their post.
The sound of whips whizzing through the air could now be heard. The Protector must be testing out whips now. Suddenly the noise stopped. Inspite of herself, Kashara opened her eyes and looked up. The Lord Protector was standing to the side now, while a soldier held the chosen whip.
"Of course it was too much to hope that the Protector who had not exercised since he began his rule would whip me. It had to be a fit and strong soldier." Kashara thought bitterly.
The Soldier raised his whip and brought it down upon her with lightning speed. Kashara anticipated the stinging pain of it cutting through her skin but it never came. The whip burst into dust upon touching her skin!
The Lord Protector was gaping openly as everyone else. Most of all was Kashara. They had all thought she was not an mage.
Clearly they were wrong.
