Kat didn't know what was up with Skye. She wouldn't talk much anymore. She would barely look at Kat. The change in Skye also changed Kat. Kat stopped talking as much. Jacob noticed it too.

They spent a lot of time together that summer. It was the summer before her senior year in high school.

But today they couldn't be together. Today was a special day. It had been two years since she had found her parents. Gibbs was taking her out on a date of his own making.

She put one last pin in her hair to hold it up in the braided bun she had done. She was wearing a dress he bought her a year ago. A one year anniversary of being reunited with each other. But this was supposedly much more special.

She came downstairs at the time she was supposed to be ready. Gibbs met her at the door. He smiled at her. "You look beautiful."

She smiled. "Thank you..."

Gibbs opened the door. She walked to the car, where he opened the door for her and got in the drivers seat. They arrived at a fancy restaurant. Kat was a bit confuse. She knew that the were having some finance issues lately. This was way out of their budget.

Nonetheless, he took her inside and they got a reserved table. Together they sat at the table. Kat was looking at him, puzzled. "What are we doing here? This is really expensive..."

"I know... But you're worth it."

Kat felt a little guilty as she ate her meal. She knew it was expensive for him. After she had eaten as much as possible, he cleared his throat. "Kat, you're 17... Almost 18. You're growing up into a very intelligent, beautiful young woman. And I need something from you. Before you are grown up for good."

"Anything, dad.."

He held her hand. "I need you to promise me something... Promise me, that you will stay the way you are. The way you have been. My sweet innocent little girl. You've only had two years with me and your mom, but we love you more than words can say. I want you to promise me you'll love us the same. And always stay pure."

Kat smiled. She was also relieved. she thought it was something scary going on. "I p-"

"Before you say anything... Words are just words. It's possible to break words. So I have here something as a symbol." He pulled out a small box. He opened it to reveal a beautiful band of white gold. On it a heart of rubies, Kat's birthstone. "It's called a promise ring. This is to take its place on your left ring finger. And there it is to remain until, well, until it's replaced with a wedding ring of your own. Because, you see, someone someday is going to sweep you off our feet," he took the ring out. "with my permission of course," he added. "And he will replace this. With a symbol of much more than a promise. But until that day, I want this to be a symbol. A symbol to show the world that you are promised. And you have promised. Can you make that deal?"

Kat nodded. Gibbs slipped the ring on her finger. "With this ring, I promise you that I will try my best to be a good father. A good example. Of what you should strive to be. And Kat, don't think of money in this. Money is only temporary. But love lasts forever. And love is a promise."

Kat smiled. She looked at the ring. Then back at Gibbs. "Thank you..." She hugged Gibbs before the two of them headed off. This was a special day indeed.

Kat held onto that promise. She held on to every word said. She would be pure. And loving. And everything else she had always tried to be. She would be perfect.
