Chapter One
Why are the buses not cancelled? I was just stepping out into the cold, winter, air. I was bundled up; I had multiple layers on the top and bottom half of my body, I also, have my long curly brown hair tucked under a hat. I don't care if anyone says anything about my drastic clothing measures when I get to school, it's like minus forty, that's freezing, scratch that it's below freezing. I'm not risking getting frostbite; I don't fancy losing any extremities.
I was making my way towards the end of the road, to wait for the big yellow death trap. I was nervous not just because of the savage weather, but because my mom took my older sister over to my grandparents. She decided today she wouldn't stay home and be lazy but go to our grandparent's and be waited on, like the spoiled brat she is. I really don't care, whenever we're out she always pretends that she doesn't know me and tries to avoid me as much as possible.
Even at home she pretends she's better than me just because I'm adopted and she'd my parents' flesh and blood child. It's not my fault my mother couldn't have any more children. I still considered her my mom, even if we're not related. I actually wish I knew my real mother, I had never mentioned it to my parents but I knew they knew who she was, I would hear them on the phone talking to this mysterious person and whenever I would ask who it was they would just wave me off. I don't know if other adopted children would want to meet their birth parents, but I do. I want to know where I came from. It has always been a mystery to me and I've always wanted to know, then I would get to feel special knowing who had created me, instead of feeling less because I had never had met them and was constantly reminded by my annoying sister.
None the less I would rather have her here than be waiting outside in the storm of the century by myself. That's what I don't get; the busses are cancelled to cover up teacher's illegal strike days but not for the storm of the century. Now that's messed up.
My bus has arrived I was about to get on when a feeling of uneasiness comes over me, but I ignore the warning and push it to the back of my mind. I climb the stairs to where my bus driver, Steve, was waiting to welcome me this morning.
"Good morning, Naomi." Steve welcomes.
"Hey." Was all I reply with, it was not a good morning, not at all.
I went to my seat and plop down into it preparing myself for the nerve filled stressful bus ride. Before I took my seat I notice Mitchel was on the bus. I was very surprised; I thought everyone else would just skip today. It's astonishing because Mitchel is an eleventh grader, he has black hair and green eyes; he was also sporting a pair of glasses. He kinda looks like Harry Potter. I don't really talk to him, I don't really talk to anyone on the bus, and all of my friends live close to me. However, some people decided we shouldn't end up on the same bus
I'm also the youngest kid on the bus being fourteen if I was only a few days older I would be in grade nine, with my birthday being January third. That also meant I was in a completely different school than everyone else, except for Sidney, we're in the same grade but we're just not friends. Speaking of Sidney she was just getting on the bus now with her older brother Dustin.
Sydney has long straight blond hair and greenish eyes with flecks of other colors and shades. She's in grade eight.
Dustin has black hair and the same green eyes as his sister. He and Sidney look very similar. Well, except for, he's, you know a guy and she's a girl, he's also in grade nine. I'm surprised his girlfriend wasn't getting on with them; she practically lives at their house.
Oh, I almost forgot, they broke up because she was moving to British Colombia which is quite far away from where we live, in Ontario.
The bus lurches forwards once again about to make the turn down a small side-road, I feel my uneasiness grow. My road isn't a highway or anything but it's a lot wider and less isolated than the one my bus was travelling down now.
