Chapter Four
** NAOMI’S POINT OF VIEW **
Kyle gets up and offers me his hand. I take it and stand up. I see Mitchel sitting off to one side holding his ax lovingly, that was really starting to get weird. I hope he doesn’t turn into a psychopath and try to kill us all with his dear beloved ax.
Dustin and Sidney were sitting side-by-side but they weren’t talking, just sitting there. They weren’t even looking at each other; Dustin was just staring at his hands sadly, what was wrong with him now. First Kyle now him, what has this world come to? Mitchel’s the only one looking happy, well I can’t really count him, he’s just being creepy.
Sydney’s just glaring at me. Why would she do- oh sh*t! She must have saw Kyle and I hugging. She likes him, now she probably thinks I’m trying to steal him from her. Although, he was never really hers to begin with but she’s a girl I know what she’s thinking. I am one myself.
I start to move away from Kyle, ever so slightly. Unfortunately, he notices and shoots me a what-are-you-doing-I-thought-we-were-friends hurt look. I don’t know how I manage to get that out of his hurt face, either he’s really good at showing his emotions or I’m just that skilled. It’s the first one, I’d like to say it’s the second one but honestly I’d be lying but you have to give me some credit for understanding his complicated facial expression. I guess I’m just a little skilled.
I look at Sidney, at him, and then back at Sidney, hoping he’d get my message without me having to spell it out for him. Apparently he does because he starts to smirk at me looking proud of himself. Are all guys like that? He’s happy because Sidney’s jealous even though he was jealous of Mitchel just a few moments and now he’s right as rain. I’m thinking he’s a little bipolar.
He takes one look at Sidney’s furious face, his eyes go wide and the smirk falls right off of his gloating face. He moves away from me. I would have shot him his what-are-you-doing-I-thought-we-were-friends-glare but Sydney’s face still looks pretty red and I really didn’t want to get b*tch slapped.
I walk over to Sydney and Dustin. Sydney takes her livid gaze off Kyle and I and reaches in her pocket searching for something; she soon pulls out her phone. She studies it for a moment… then lets out an ear piercing shriek.
“What the h*ll, Sydney?” Dustin exclaims, rubbing his ears. That brought him out of stupor. “What was that for?”
“I have cell service!” She exclaims excitedly. That’s also when Mitchel joins us.
“No way!” I mimic her enthusiastic tone. I didn’t want her to be annoyed with me. I thought if I praise her she won’t be upset with me.
“Yeah, no way.” Kyle says in a plain dull normal voice, way it go Kyle! I hit his shoulder.
“What?” Sydney asks sounding perplexed, confusion was written all over her face.
“It’s just we already knew about there being cell service here.” Dustin explains quietly.
“We had already started to make the 9-1-1 call when we realised you were missing.” Mitchel adds.
“Hmmmpp well I guess I’m of no use then.” Sydney replies grumpily.
“You can call them back, we never finished the call.” I offer.
“Whatever.” She snaps back at me, I had the sneaking suspicion that she was still mad at me.
Sydney punches the three numbers into her phone, and then she put it on speaker. Thank God, I don’t think I could handle listening to only one side of the conversation.
“9-1-1 what is your emergency?” The operator asks, the voice sounds strangely familiar.
“Oh, hey, my names Sidney Winsor and I’m with my brother Dustin, Naomi Wheeler, Kyle Morrison, and Mitchel Smith our bus crashed and something happened to our bus driver.” Sydney tells the woman.
“Yes, I know dear. I was the one you talked to before remember?” The woman asks.
“No I was gone.” Sydney answers vaguely.
“Well, I’m glad to know your back and safe.” The lady replies, “Are you still with your bus?”
“No, we set out on foot.” Dustin answers her question.
“How are you moving your bus driver?” She asks.
“We made a makeshift stretcher.” Kyle tells her. I hear the sound of a pen on paper in the background.
“Where are you trying to make it to?” She asks, God, she has a lot of questions!
“My house.” I answer but then realising she couldn’t see me Dustin jumped in.
“Naomi’s house but the snow’s fall is getting worse and its getting exceedingly hard to see.” He adds.
“Oh no!” The woman exclaims, losing all professionalism, “You’re in the middle of the storm.” I guess we forgot to mention that. Oops, I assumed she knew.
I nod. I’m on the phone why the h*ll was I nodding?
“Yes.” Sidney clarifies.
“We can’t send anyone in for you.” She tells us sadly as if sensing our next question.
“Then what the h*ll are we supposed to do?” Dustin asks rhetorically.
I guess she didn’t get the memo because she answered.
“I would try to continue onto Naomi’s house.” She suggests, “As quickly as possible, I think your bus driver may be in a coma and he needs to get to safety before his condition worsens and if that happens he may never wake up.”
We all sighed in defeat, I probably would have started yelling if I wasn’t so exhausted, our plan had failed and Steve was in a coma what else could go wrong? Now, I just jinxed it, I am just so f*cking smart today aren’t I?
“I’m truly sorry.” The woman says and she sounds like she was, she must be a mother or something to be so worried about kids she doesn’t even know, it must be a mother’s instinct, “But there is nothing I can do.”
I sickening feeling comes into my chest, I feel as though I can’t breathe, this is it there’s no getting out. No one would be able to save us anytime soon and the words that woman spoke made it final and definite. I start to see black spots in my vision; I feel my legs go weak and the impact as my body hits the ground. My head jars back and a shooting pain travels down my spine that’s when everything goes black.
