Chapter Thirteen
Days passed by, it had been a week and two days since my date with Dustin, meaning that we had been stuck here for two weeks now. The food is still stocked up and the generator is going strong. The storm also seemed like it was calming. About time, two weeks that is not normal at all.
I’m hoping they find a way to get us out with the storms violence calming down, but I’m still not sure about the other threat. If there was no other threat we’d be leaving right now, also Dustin says we’d go out again once we get out. He wanted our second date to be somewhere where we weren’t stranded, and more fun. I really didn’t care, I’m surprised he wants to go on dates he’s fifteen, it’s not like he has a lot of walking around money.
We’d been getting calls from 9-1-1, which was now converted into the Storm Help Line, since it was the dispatch in our area that was temporarily moved to a new location. The same lady called every time. Nothing had changed so far, she hadn’t told us we would be getting a visit from Leo, Jeff, or Isaac yet.
Right now we were playing monopoly; we had been playing a lot of board games lately. It seemed like this storm was bringing out our inner child, we haven’t done anything normal teenagers would do if they were stuck alone in a house together; no getting drunk, trashing the place, beer pong or anything of the sort. We were really being responsible, I think it would be different if there were more of us but with such a small group we felt no reason to be bad.
In our game, I was the banker and Dustin continues to insist that I’m cheating because I’m whooping all of their a**es. I’m not, I’m just good at the game, well that’s not true, let’s just say the dice are nice to me.
“You are totally cheating.” Dustin insists as I buy another property, putting my credit card into the slot on the electronic bank. He was watching closely to make sure I was taking away the right amount.
“Am not,” I argue, “The dice are just nicer to me.”
“It has nothing to do with the fact that you’re the banker?” He inquires.
“No, I wouldn’t cheat it’s just a game.” I retort, “But I can’t say the same for you guys, that’s why I’m the banker.”
Dustin rolls his eyes and takes his turn. He moves his piece around the board, straight onto one of my properties, that just so happened to have a hotel on it. I smirk at him.
“You are so cheating.” He whines handing over his card.
“I didn’t roll the dice, you did, so the only person you have to blame is yourself.” I retort.
He frowns and doesn’t say anything.
That’s when my phone rings.
I rush up to answer it, the game forgotten. “Hello.”
“Hello, Naomi.” The same woman says, we’ve learned her name is Marcy.
“Hey.” I repeat my introduction, waiting for her to say something.
“I have some good news.” She says.
“Really?” I ask, putting my phone’s speaker on so the others could hear.
“Yes.” She says, “The other country has left.”
“Why?” I ask.
“The storm confused them and they ended up looking in the wrong place, where there was no oil, they gave up and left deciding there was no reason for them to stay.” She explains.
“How did you know about this?” I ask.
“We have our ways.” I can practically see her winking through the phone at us, “So we will be able to send in a helicopter.”
“Really?” I repeat, the thought was so shocking I couldn’t believe that we will be able to get out, “You’re not kidding?”
“No, I’m not. It wouldn’t be fair to get your hopes up.” She says and relief floods through my body, “It will take a day or two but unless the country comes back or the storm worsens once again, the rescue group will be coming in.”
“Yay.” We all exclaim.
“Is it going to be Leo, Jeff, and Isaac again?” Sydney asks.
“Yes, you already know who they are, they’ve already made the journey, and they’ve volunteered to come back in for you, they were the only ones.” She says.
“Well, that’s great.” Mitchel says.
“Yes, luckily for you, they are the best trained rescue team we have.” Marcy says.
“Really?” I ask, “They’re so young.”
“Young but talented.” She corrects. I laugh. “I hope to see you guys soon.”
“Will you be waiting for us?” Dustin asks.
“Yes, I can’t wait to meet all five of you.” She says happily.
“Well, we can’t wait to meet you too.” I reply honestly, I really want to meet this lady she’s been there for us since the beginning.
