A knock on the door interrupted that magical moment.
"Shoes for Miss Davenport," said the bellboy.
"Thank you," Daniela took the package and politely dismissed him.
"Now, to complete your outfit," Daniela smiled, "I have the perfect match for your stunning dress." She carefully unwrapped the paper and marveled at the sparkling scarlet high heels.
"They're beautiful," said Ava.
"They will also help you survive tonight's gala," said Daniela.
"Gala? I thought I was only going to dinner."
"Lapo dinner parties always end with a magnificent waltz danced by our people."
"But," Ava blushed, "I can't dance."
"You can now," Daniela pointed at the shoes.
"These are intelligent shoes, our newest invention. They were invented to help our guests get through our ceremonies," she laughed. "When you mentally impress the command 'dance' on them, they will figure out the music playing and dance for you. All you have to do is dance along."
"Wait. What? Mentally impress a command? What does that mean?"
"Oh, you just focus on the shoes on your feet and nothing else and say 'dance' in your head. Try it."
Ava put on the shoes, tensed her muscles and repeated the command 'dance' in her head.
"It's not working," she complained.
"Oh, sorry," said Daniela, "it's not working because there's no music. Let me fix that." She pressed a button and a beautiful melody filled the cabin.
"Try now," said Daniela.
Ava was wondering how that could possibly work and tried to command the shoes to dance.
"Nothing," she admitted. "How is that even possible?"
"You can't doubt it. The shoes will sense your lack of confidence and won't budge."
"This is ridiculous!" Ava exclaimed realizing only after the fact how rude she must have sounded.
"Maybe only the Lapo can use them?" she tried.
"All our inventions are meant to be used both by Lapo and Humans. Try again," Daniela prompted.
Ava was still very sceptic about this so called invention but she summoned all her mental powers and directed them towards the shoes. "Nothing," she concluded.
"Don't worry, in time you will master this, and even if you don't use their special functions they are still exquisite shoes."
That was true, Ava thought.
"Now hair and makeup," Daniela suggested, "Please take a seat," she gestured towards a vanity table in the large bathroom. Daniela was obviously skilled at what she was doing because the result of her work took Ava's breath away. She already loved the way she looked in the dress and with the shoes, hair and makeup she thought she could even fall in love with herself.
"I informed Sir Richglow that you are ready, he will pick you up shortly. Do you need anything else for tonight, Ava?"
"No, I think I'm good," she kept admiring herself in the mirror, something she had never done before.
"In that case, I will see you tomorrow morning. Have a wonderful evening," and with this, she left the room.
