"B-but Jack. Why would you want to save Davey. Y-you beat him up." I stuttered.

"Listen kid, it was those boys. They forced me to hurt your brother. And I would do anything to take it back. I would explain better, but I don't think we have the time right now." Jack responded. I nodded my head. "He's somewhere out there, but I don't know where it is." I said, wiping the tears from my face.

"We'll find him. I promise." Jack reassured me, a fake smile plastered on his face. "Now, help me wake up everyone else."

I bolted down the street, a huge group of boys trailing behind me. I knew Davey had to be somewhere nearby, I just wasn't sure exactly where. I slowed to a stop and turned around to address everyone.

"Hey! I need all of your attention!" I shouted over the ruckus. Twenty faces turned towards me. "Ok, here's how it is. Davey has been taken by two mean people. We need to save him. But I don't know where he is! We need to find him! And fast!" I yelled. The boys nodded in unison, and then they ran in all different directions. Jack stepped up next to me.

"Woah, woah, woah. We need to do this in an organized fashion. Go in pairs and search each building. If you find him, whistle. Okay?" he called out. The newsies followed his instructions and ran out to inspect the buildings.

Jack knelt down next to me. "Whadda you say. Shall we go find your brother?"

I nodded and we ran down the block. We slowly walked up to one of the buildings.

"Okay kid, go peek in that window." Jack urged me.

"Are you sure that's polite?" I asked nervously.

"I don't care if it's polite, I'm trying to save your brothers life."

I hopped down to my knees and peered through the pane. It was just an empty bathroom. "Nope, nothing." I sighed. We continued this process of looking through windows until we were all the way down the block. I began to grow nervous. I didn't want my brother to be hurt again.

"J-Jack, what if we never find him?" I blurted out suddenly. Jack stared down at me with pain in his eyes. He didn't answer my question. I looked down and continued checking rooms. Then I heard a whistle, off in the distance. I jumped up.

"Jack, do you hear that? It's a whistle!" I shouted, tugging on his vest. I grabbed his hand and ran as quickly as my legs could carry me to the source of the whistle. Elmer and Finch were whistling as loud as they could. All of a sudden, the door to the building they were standing in front of burst open. The two mean boys stood there. Their stares penetrated my soul, and I clutched Jack's hand. "Give us our friend back." Jack said coolly. "I don't think so." the blonde jeered and shut the door. We heard a lock click and laughing. I ran up to the door and pounded on it.

"Leave my brother alone!" I shouted, trying to kick the door down. More laughing. A hatred unlike anything I had ever known grew inside me, and I broke the door into pieces with one strong kick.

The two boys stared at me in total shock as I panted, breathless. "Don't. Ever. Hurt. My. Brother." I commanded them. The newsies rushed in and stood behind me. I looked back and smiled at them. "You messed with the wrong kid. Because you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us." Race  sneered. "Soak 'em for Davey!" Jack shouted, and the boys all charged.
