{davey's perspective}
It was the first day since my father had hurt himself that we had gone to school. Les was less than excited. I was sort of happy, but I missed my friends. I walked Les to the school, but he made me leave when I got to the classroom. Said I would ruin his reputation. I bolted to my school, not wanting to be late. I was almost to the classroom when I was stopped by a foot being kicked out in front of me. I stumbled and dropped my books. I gathered my books and stood up, staring at the boy who had tripped me. "Look, it's Davey! I thought you were too busy hanging out with the beggars to come to school." he chuckled, his friend joining in. I ignored them and kept walking. I recalled the boys name, Clarence, with his friend Samuel. Samuel jumped in front of me, cutting me short. "I thought you liked school." he smirked. "Why'd you leave?" I pushed past him, not wanting to get involved in an argument. "Why'd you leave David? Huh?" Clarence taunted. "Because my dad lost his job. But now he got it back, and I'm back here. Now leave me alone." I blurted, quickening my pace. Clarence and Samuel were bigger than me, stronger. I couldn't get in a fight with them. Not without my friends. Not without the newsies. "Where you going David?" Clarence sneered. "Class. You should probably be headed there too. Goodbye." I replied coldly. Samuel and Clarence backed off. "He's right. We're late. My dad will kill me if I have another tardy." Samuel mumbled. "You're a dweeb." Clarence growled, facing me. I shrugged it off and ran to class. "I'm never going to survive without the newsies. How did I survive before?" I muttered under my breath.
