{Davey's Perspective}

    The hard ground was cool to the touch. I attempted to stand up, but my body just wouldn't. I collapsed again, my hope lost. Clarence and Samuel had left after they heard someone outside. I found the strength to sit up and inspect my wounds. I gently touched a hand to my back. It stung like crazy. They had beaten me pretty well. The scars from the whip wouldn't be going away anytime soon. I crumpled back to the ground, defeated. My face was tear streaked, and I felt like I had lost all the water in my body. I discovered there was more as the tears began to flow once more. Why was I so weak and pathetic? I hadn't even tried to fight back.

    I just couldn't understand how they could be so cruel. What had I ever done to them? I honestly couldn't recall. I stared at the ceiling, waiting for whatever came next. Maybe, just maybe, the boys would come and save me. I smiled at the thought of them storming the abandoned building.

I heard a clanging from somewhere outside the small room. My head shot up, scared but hopeful. The door slowly creaked open. But it wasn't one of my friends opening the door. It was Jack.

"Davey?" came his voice, small and fearful.

"Go away." I demanded.

"Davey, I'm sorry! Those boys made me do it! Now come on, let's get you out of here!" he insisted, helping me up.

"How do I know you won't just beat me up again?" I choked out. Jack looked at me, hurt in his eyes. "I just don't think I can trust you anymore." I said, my eyes watering. I didn't want to cry. I didn't want to be weak, especially not in front of Jack. I still had some pride.

"David Jacobs, I swear to God that I will never beat you up again. I'm trying to save you!" Jack sighed. I gave in. There goes my pride. Jack helped me up, and I couldn't stop myself from giving him a hug.

"Thank you Jack." I said, a smile breaking through my gloomy frown.

"No problem. Now let's go find those troublemakers and soak 'em real good. For Davey." Jack smirked.
