Laura knew her husband would immediately panic as soon as he'd see her in this frenzied state but she couldn't help it; the information she had just heard, shocked her.
When the front door swings open and Joshua walks in, it takes him less than half a second to absorb his mate's inner turmoil and quickly rushes to her side.
"Laura, what's wrong?" he wipes her tear stained cheeks as she looks up at him.
"The Blood Moon Pack, they're raiding through every pack looking for-"
Laura didn't have to finish the sentence for Joshua to know what she was talking about.
"Is the Alpha with them during these raids?" he rushes, feeling his wolf stir restlessly.
Laura nods and buries her face into his neck; Joshua holds his distressed mate close to him, wondering how long they'd have to be on the run.
"I can't let that pack... those monsters find us, especially not Cassie." Laura looks up at her husband searching his tense brown eyes.
"Maybe we should tell Cass about-" Joshua starts.
"No!" Laura gasps, leaning back in horror.
She wouldn't let her precious daughter near those foul beasts who call themselves Werewolves.
"They'll ruin her, Joshua." She shakes her head.
"You know she's meant to be more than just an Omega." Joshua reasons, folding his arms as he scowls at her stubbornness.
Laura knew that her mate's bloodline was strong, that their daughter would carry on that strength. But she couldn't find herself to put her at risk again.
"Promise me something." Laura starts.
"Anything, darling." Joshua pulls her close.
"Promise, you'll not let them take her away from us." She pleads.
Joshua's face softens immediately and he plants a soft kiss on his mate's forehead, smoothing the creases being formed and relaxing his agitated wolf.
"I love you Laura Woods, and I won't let anyone harm your or our daughter." Joshua vows, brushing his wife's hair back before leaving a lingering kiss on her tear stained lips.
"Besides, what's life if my favourite two girls are not around?" he adds.
Laura smiles, trying to push the fear of threatened danger away but her mind constantly triggers back to that one horrible moment in her life where she thought she'd lose everything.
FLASHBACK
Cassandra was thirteen and still a daddy's girl when she refused to go to the markets with her mother, preferring to spend the afternoon dissecting frogs with her father - the inquisitive doctor.
The market was full today which meant more products were being put out. Laura was looking for rare herbs and some fine fabric to make some clothes for her daughter. Her eyes narrowed on a beautiful cobalt blue material.
"Could I have a metre of that please?" Laura points it out to the woman sitting behind all the colourful material.
The woman smiles before measuring out the desired amount.
Suddenly, the hair on the back of Laura's neck stands as she hands the money to the woman and picks the bag with the material inside.
She instantly regrets doing it when she turns around and her bright blue, widened eyes lock with the heartless ones of the person she least wanted to see; the one she and her family had been running from.
"Laura, what a pleasant surprise." His small smile sends ice cold chills down her spine and she attempts to side step him in order to escape.
They both knew that to Laura, this was far from pleasant.
"Walk with me," he grabs her arm and yanks her beside him, his bone crushing grip reminding Laura that she had no other choice but to cooperate.
"I always wondered where your family ran off to; would you care to enlighten me?"
"No, I would not." Laura answers swiftly.
"Don't think that the humans around us will stop me from ripping your head from your body." His grip tightens as he whispers dangerously close to her ear, making Laura wince.
He was known as the Mad Alpha for a reason.
"Killing me won't get you the answers you want, Dmitri." She growls bravely, knowing that defiance against any Alpha would probably cost her life.
"No, it won't Mrs Woods, you're right." His grey eyes narrow slightly.
Dmitri's long life period had made him ruthless, eradicating anything that got in his way and this family got in his way, testing his century-long patience. But the Mad Alpha knew the time would come when he would take back what rightfully belonged to his pack.
The pack that took blood, sweat and tears to establish from scratch.
"Until next time, Laura Woods." Dmitri bends down to kiss her on the cheek before swiftly turning and walking away from the woman's shaking frame.
