The door behind me crashes open and I scramble up to see Logan rushing towards Dmitri with a large syringe in hand.
"W-what're you doing?" I ask as he helps my mate to his feet and plunges the syringe into the vein on the inside of his forearm.
I cringe when Dmitri lets out a pained howl and I move forward to do something, anything to stop his pain.
"I'll have to take him down to the basement, before the effects of the syringe wear off." Logan explains briskly as he loops Dmitri's arm over his shoulder and they shuffle out of the office.
I follow behind as Logan takes his Alpha down a flight of stairs and into the cool basement, through a metal door to a room that held a large steel cage inside.
"He's going in there?" I whisper.
"It's the only way to keep himself and the pack safe, Luna. You'll have to wait outside the room until he's back to normal." The Beta answers after a few moments of silence.
I watch as Dmitri is put into the cage and locked up, falling to the floor as the syringe quickly starts to wear off, the black veins coming back.
Logan urges me out of the room and locks the door behind him before turning around to face me.
"He'll be alright, Cassandra." Logan attempts at reassuring me before stalking away back upstairs.
I couldn't leave Dmitri like that on his own, even if it meant staying outside this room the whole day until he came back to me again then so be it.
Sliding down to the floor, I tuck my knees towards my chest and cringe as I hear the ferocious growls from within, feeling my wolf hide herself from the monster who invaded my nightmares.
"He'll be alright, he'll be alright." I whisper to myself, repeating the words that Logan had said.
...
I'm running through the same thick, dense forest, running from the same monster who always seemed to easily catch up to me. Suddenly, I stop in mid-stride and turn to face the red eyed beast who had now slowed to a predatory stalk and was baring its canines at me.
I stare intently at it, hoping that it would just shift back into the mate that I knew but there was nothing but bloodlust in its gaze...
I don't know when I had fallen asleep but when I jerk awake, my head is resting on the cool floor with my body still curled up into a ball. Sitting up, I hear out for any noises coming from Dmitri but silence welcomes me like a tidal wave, sending back into the curled up position.
How long is this nightmare going to be?
...
Footsteps jerk me to a sitting position but I leap up when I realise it's Logan coming down the stairs.
"What's going on?" I ask immediately as Logan pulls out a set of keys.
"He's with us again." He murmurs before unlocking the door and walking in.
I move to follow but the door is shut right in front of me, making me even more nervous as to what was happening on the other side.
A few silent moments of pacing and the door is reopened, with Logan hauling Dmitri out as he staggers on his feet.
The dark circles under his eyes gave him a hollow look and I swallow the cry that was creeping up.
My mate looks up slightly but it was enough for our eyes to meet; I step towards him but stop when he opens his mouth to speak.
"Why is she here?" Dmitri croaks.
Logan's brows furrow slightly in confusion and I join.
"I'm here to make sure you're alright. What do you mean, why am I here?" I answer slowly as the familiar feeling of frustration crawls up my spine.
"Go upstairs, angel."
"But-"
"Cassandra, go." He growls.
Grinding my teeth to stop myself from saying anything more, I straighten my back and stiffly walk up the stairs. My wolf paces impatiently and I decide to head out, jogging my way into the woods before shifting into my lupine form.
Ignoring my wolf's desire to interact with her mate, I run through the sparsely spaced trees until I find a deer and roughly bring it down; ripping into its flesh viciously and guzzling it all down.
And the cycle starts, running and hunting my way through the quiet forest until I reach the edge of the territory, two wolves stood there to remind me of that fact.
They bow their heads towards me before looking away.
Growling lowly, I turn back around and shoot off in a sprint back to the centre of the territory. I hadn't realised I had spent most of the day out in my wolf form until the sun starts to fall.
As soon as I'm inside, I shift into my human form and quickly scramble up the the stairs, covering most of my naked form and hoping that Logan was nowhere close. I close the bedroom door behind me as soon as I shuffle in and gasp in surprise when I see Dmitri on the bed, an arm limply slung over his shoulder.
He sits up quickly and slides off the bed but I rush towards him when I notice him wobbling slightly.
"I'm fine." He grumbles as he lets me slide an arm around his side.
"Does this always happen...after a shift like that?" I ask as he presses his nose against the curve of my neck.
"Don't worry about it, angel."
"Pushing me away from the topic won't help." I lean back.
Dmitri frowns down at me, his silver eyes making the slight dark circles look ever more prominent.
"I'm a monster, that is all there is too know and if you get any closer the next time, I might not be able to control the beast inside."
I let his hands cup my cheeks as he leans his forehead against mine.
"I can't lose you now, angel." Dmitri murmurs.
"There has to be some way to get in control of it." I whisper.
"This is the punishment I get for not protecting my first pack, angel. I need to live with this." He shakes his head slowly.
