Ring ring ring.
"I won't answer it."
Ring ring ring.
"You need to."
Ring ring ring.
"I can't."
Ring ring ring.
"Sure you can." He touched my arm. "Do it for me."
Then, and only then, did I consider picking it up.
I pressed the green button with a shaking hand. "He-hello?"
"Natasha," said Adam's stern voice. "Is there something you need to tell me?"
"Uh.....," my voice trailed off as my eyes traced Jimmy. "....no?"
"Are you quite certain?"
"....yes."
"Because a little birdy told me otherwise."
"What...what did this little birdy say?"
I stood in terrible silence, waiting in fear of what his next words would be. What he said next caught me off guard. "Only that you might be taking a break from writing," he blurted. "Why didn't you tell me??"
I breathed a silent sigh of relief. Jimmy, whom had been listening by the phone, stopped tensing up and collapsed onto the blanket, covering his face with his hands.
"Sorry, Adam!" I said. "I should tell you these things. Yes, I'm in fact taking a little break from songwriting - not a long one. Just for a few weeks. I need a break."
"I quite agree," he replied. "I just wish you would have told me before I had to find out through the papers."
"I know, Adam."
"Good," he said. "No more secrets! The next time I have to find something out about you from the Daily Mail, I'll go bonkers!"
"There won't be a next time," I lied.
"I'm counting on it, love. Talk to you soon. Cheers!"
"Bye!"
Click.I collapsed on the blanket beside Jimmy. He rolled over and buried his head in my sleeve. "Aaaaaaagh that was close!" he said, his voice muffled by the sweater.
"I know!" I replied, ruffling his messy hair. He looked up at me, chin poking my arm.
"How long are we going to keep this quiet?" he asked.
"I don't know," I said. "Hopefully not forever."
"Mm," he said, leaning down to kiss my collarbone. "Mm-hmm. I agree. 'Cause you know what I want to do more than anything else?"
"What?"
"I wanna show you off, baby. I wanna show you off to the whole world. I want everybody to know you're mine."
I smiled weakly. "I wish you could," I muttered. He rolled onto his back and stared at the sky. "I don't think it would be that bad."
"What?"
"If everybody knew."
I thought on that for a minute. "Maybe....but how can we be sure?"
"We can't be," Jimmy replied. "But I think we should go for it. Not right away....maybe think on it a little. It would be great to be able to tell everybody how beautiful you are."I blushed harder and turned to face him, leaning on my side. He did the same. "Jimmy?"
"Yeah?"
"Nobody's ever wanted to show me off before."
"That's not true," he said.
"How do you know?"
"Because," he said, "I bet you anything they were all too scared to try."
"Scared?" I repeated, unsure what he meant.
"Aw, c'mon," he said, "a pretty lady like you? That's intimidating. Think about how long it took me to say a word to you. That wasn't accidental."I thought on the past year, how easy it would've been for Jimmy to get ahold of me, and how he never had until that night at Taylor's party. "Wow," I said. "I....I never thought of that."
"Mm-hmm," he nodded, raising his eyebrows ever-so-slightly - just enough to get my heart going a little faster.
"What do you say we get out of here," I said softly. "We could go back to my place and have some ice cream - maybe I'll put on some Glenn Miller."
"I'd love that," said Jimmy, tilting his head. Suddenly, he snapped out of it. "But I can't...I've gotta get back to work."
"Oh yeah," I replied. "I totally forgot!"
We cleaned up the roof and started heading back to the staircase. Jimmy pulled me in for a quick kiss goodbye before we had to go back in public. "Wanna swing by after work?"
"Of course," he said, beaming as always. We shook hands casually in the presence of his coworkers, and then I turned to leave (although I could've sworn he winked at me when I caught his eye across the room from the elevator). I still felt on cloud nine all the way back to my apartment. I didn't even care about the paparazzi snapping photos; usually it got a bit on my nerves, but not today. Nothing could ruin today.
And I knew I was supposed to be taking a break from writing, but I couldn't help it; that man was the best muse I'd ever had. The minute I got home, I grabbed my guitar and started writing three different songs, each one about Jimmy. I wrote for hours, until a knock came at my door.
I swung it open and let my boyfriend in, soaking wet from the rain outside (which in my writing trance I hadn't even noticed). "Poor thing!" I cooed, running to get a blanket for him.
"I forgot an umbrella," he explained sheepishly.
"Awh, it's okay," I replied, wrapping the large fleece around his shoulders. He chuckled and shivered from the cold as I kissed his wet forehead. "I guess you're not up for ice cream anymore, huh?"
"Probably not," he laughed. He sat down on the couch and Salt approached him, purring against his legs until he picked her up. I pulled out two mugs and started making hot chocolate instead.
"How does cocoa sound?"
"Perfect!" he cried from the living room. I glanced over to see Salt comfortably nestled in Jimmy's lap, enjoying the feel of his hands ruffling her soft fur. I smiled as I poured the hot water and stirred the marshmallows around. By the time I reentered the room, Salt had her pretty green eyes shut, almost asleep from being so relaxed. Jimmy took his mug from my hands and thanked me quietly, so as not to wake the cat. I sat on the floor and sipped from my steaming cup, enjoying everything about the moment - the fluffy rug beneath me, the pitter-patter of rain hitting the rooftop and windows, the soft purring of Salt, the sight of Jimmy drenched with a Beatles blanket around his shoulders and a hot cocoa mug in his strong hands, the mixed fragrance of chocolate, raindrops, and cologne wafting throughout the room. How could I be so lucky to have this? What did I do to deserve such a moment, such a glimpse of heaven?
Suddenly, Jimmy broke the silence, calling me from my thoughts. "Tasha," he whispered. I'd been staring out the window. I turned to face him again, finding his chocolate eyes once more.
"Hmm?"
He got a look on his face like he was extremely excited; the kind of excitement where you're so elated, you almost don't want to show it. One corner of his mouth upturned, his eyes brighter than ever, Jimmy whispered, "I love you."
Even though he'd said it earlier, my heart still froze this time around. I found myself making the same face he was making. "I love you, too," I whispered back, cradling the scalding mug in my hands.A/N: Yeah, this was fluffy, but I ain't even mad xD Thanks for reading/voting, falpals!
