When I arrive home from school, choosing to walk instead of disturbing my father even though I knew he wouldn't mind, I realise that the first day didn't go as bad as I thought. This was mostly because Caleb made everything much more fun when around him, no wonder why he is so popular both with the pack and at high school.
He'd make a great Alpha if he could be one.
Caleb's older brother, Micah, on the other hand was more reserved who only seemed to strike a conversation when there was the utmost need to do so; maybe he was different when one gets to know him a little more.
As I drop my backpack on the kitchen counter, I notice that both my parents were not home. A note was left beside the sink and I picked it up to read.
Cass
I'm currently assisting a birth; could you head over to the Alpha's house to check on Delilah, the Beta's mate.
Mom
Setting the piece of paper down with shaking hands, I bite my lip at the thought of stepping into the Alpha's home. Hopefully, it will be less daunting with his parents now gone but Micah scared the hell out of me. I open the overhead cupboard and grab the spare medical bag. Throwing my cap somewhere behind me as I head out, I lock the door before running to my destination.
The wooden door opens before I have the chance to knock and I'm facing Jasper, the Alpha's Beta.
"Is your mom not available?" he frowns in confusion.
"No, she's already on duty." I shake my head.
Jasper ushers me in and closes the door behind me before leading me up a flight of spiral shaped stairs. I try not to stare open mouthed at everything but it was hard not to when everything looked better than my old, shabby house.
We reach a bedroom and I find Delilah sitting on the bed with her back against the headboard, huffing through a painful contraction. I immediately set my bag on the floor and rushed towards her.
"How long have you been having contractions?" I ask.
"Since last night, they're getting closer together now." She pants.
"I need more pillows and some towels." I briefly glance at a shell shocked Jasper before he scuttles out of the room.
Running into the en suite and vigorously washing my hands, I run back out and slow a stray strand of hair from my eyes.
"I'm going to have to check how dilated you are." I warn as I snap a pair of latex gloves on.
Delilah nods and parts her knees as I gently lift her dress and find her cervix, feeling the soft pad of the baby's head almost ready to exit into the world.
"Towels and pillows." Jasper runs back in, placing three pillows behind Delilah and placing the towels beside me before grabbing his mate's hand.
"When you're ready, I'm gonna need you to take a deep breath and push as hard as you can as I count to ten." I look at Delilah's sweating face, her jet black hair pulled back, making her features look smaller.
"Okay." She gasps.
I slowly count to ten as Delilah pushes, the grip on her mate's hand crushing as I watch him shift in discomfort. When I reach ten, Delilah's shoulders sag as Jasper murmurs encouraging words into her ear.
"This time exhale as you push and continue to take those slow deep breaths as I count to ten." I murmur, watching as the head starts to make more of a show.
A couple more attempts of the same pattern and half an hour later, a baby girl is born, letting out a small cry to announce her arrival.
I cut the umbilical cord and got rid of the after birth before placing her in Delilah's arms after wrapping her up. I clean the blood and leave the room as the new parents relish the new addition to their family.
