(10) The movie date

"Riley what did your uncle say to you?" Lucas asked. He looked upset and Riley wasn't sure if he looked that way because Josh claimed that Lucas was hurting her or because Josh seemed to now have feelings for the girl Lucas was dating.
"He just wanted to make sure I was ok. I convinced him that everything is as it should be." Riley smiled.
"Ok good. Now let's go! We have to pick another movie to watch because the one we picked at first started ten minutes ago." Charlie said.
"Yeah we should get going" Farkel said.
"Ok but please don't you dare tell us the ending ok!" said Lucas, " we get it you're smart and of course we're impressed by you."
Farkel laughs at this.
"Yeah we love you, so stop!" Maya and Riley say together.
"Don't you worry, I will keep him quiet." Smackle says with a mischievous grin.
"Smackle!" Riley exclaimed.
"What Riley? I simple meant I am going to buy him a milkshake."

At the movie theaters the gang is standing in line to get snacks.
"So of course we are getting popcorn and licorice." Charlie says.
"Of course" Riley says with a smile "I think we should also order an Icee, two straws"
Charlie laughs nervously then says,"Yeah I'd like that..."
Behind them Maya asks Lucas what they will be getting.
"Popcorn and chocolate" he says happily.
"And two cokes." Maya says holding up two fingers, " don't think we're at their level yet." she says pointing at Riley and Charlie.
"Yeah...no." Lucas said thoughtfully. Of course they weren't on Charlie and Riley's level, those two really liked each other and were comfortable in each other's company meanwhile Maya and Lucas weren't even sure what they felt for each other, and they were certainly not used to each other yet.
"Hot dogs?" Smackle says to Farkel.
"I like the way you think lady." Farkel says nodding. The line begins to move forward but Smackle holds Farkel back.
"What the!"
"Shhh!" Smackle says holding her finger to her lips.
"What?"
"I need to talk to you."
"What ever about?" Farkel says in a flirty tone. Smackle hits him on the arm.
"It's not about us dummy, it's about what happened at Riley's..."
"Oh"
"Yeah. Look when I went to the bathroom, I paused by her door and I heard something you may want to know..."
"What's that Smackle?"
"Josh likes Maya, but more importantly Riley admitted to him that she still likes Lucas."
Farkel looked at the ground looking forlorn but unsurprised.
"... You already knew" Smackle said looking confused, "... If you know this why haven't you told anyone? Why haven't you done anything?"
"It would hurt too many people. And I promised Riley I wouldn't say anything until she was sure about how she felt,  it would hurt Riley if I said anything ... But who says I haven't done anything?" Farkel says with a grin.
"What did you do?" Smackle has a small smile paying on her lips.
"Do you actually think that Riley's uncle was there by coincidence? Josh is hardly ever at the Mathews apartment because he's busy with school."
"That's actually incredibly brave of you Farkel...and no of course I didn't think that was a coincidence, I don't believe in coincidences."
"Wait, brave? How?"
"What you're doing for your friends and how you went out of your way to try to master their feelings. It is so brave because there is no easy answer or even an equation to figure it out and yet you go ahead and try to help anyway."
"Of course, I love them. I would do anything for them. They were there to remind I'm important when I felt like a nothing, so I have to be there while they think they know what they are feeling."
"So how'd you get Josh to come over anyways? He got their so casual like he really just thought to come by out of the blue."
"Oh that, I texted him from Mr. Mathews's phone a week ago, telling him he needed to come by more often, then I hinted he should be there Friday... Ya know typical Mr. Mathews stuff, trying to be sneaky and failing at it." Farkel said and Smackle laughed, "Wow I never knew you had this sneaky side to you. I like it!"
Farkel laughs embarrassed.
"Hi what can I get for you?" a teenaged boy at the counter said.
"Hello, can I get two hot dogs and a large strawberry milkshake? Thanks!"
"Sure thing boss! That'll be twelve dollars and fifty cents."
Farkel payed the boy and grabbed the hot dogs, then he and Smackle made their way to the movie room where the rest of the gang was waiting for them right outside.
"We should all sit together right?" Lucas said.
"Yeah." Riley said looking at Lucas briefly. Charlie looked intently at Riley, he couldn't figure out why but every time Riley talked to Lucas his heart sank. He was tired of feeling like a third wheel in their relationship.
I'm being ridiculous, they aren't even doing anything wrong. No longing looks between the two, no odd closeness, just Lucas looking irritated. Which I knew would happen, who wouldn't be upset about losing the most perfect girl in the world, Charlie thought smugly as they made their way into the theater. Riley had grabbed his hand as they were entering, he realized it was probably because their was a huge chance of her falling, but he would take what ever he could got.

Lucas lead Maya to their seats next to Farkel and Smackle. He had trailed behind when he noticed that Riley had taken Charlie's hand. He simply didn't have the stomach to see them together yet, not when he thought Riley was meant to be with him. However he did know he had to try it with Maya, put his best foot forward with her. He had to see if there was something there, before breaking it off, which he felt like he might do if he kept feeling this way about Riley and her boyfriend.

"Yay" Riley say as the movie begins.
"Shhhhh" Maya says playfully.
"Blah!" Riley says
"You know your lucky this movie is empty Riley." Farkel says matter of factly.
"I know!" Riley says in a singsong voice.
Lucas laughs at this, why is she so adorable? he thought. Then Maya threw popcorn at him, Riley, and Charlie. Which naturally is the start of a popcorn throwing war.
"No fair Mathews you have licorice in your popcorn it hurts more!" Maya says.
"Yay! Thanks Charlie!" Riley winks at her boyfriend before throwing more popcorn and then ducking behind a seat. They'd been running around the entire theater room and then there she was hiding behind a seat next to Lucas.
"Lucas, hello" Riley said playfully in her grown up voice.
"Hi"
"Hey" she says with a giggle.
"Hi" Lucas says breathlessly.
"That's it huckleberry you're going down!" Riley says.
"Riley?" Charlie says as we walks to the seat Riley and Lucas were hiding behind.
"Hi" Riley says looking up nervously.
"That's my girl! She got you good Ranger Rick" Maya says dying with laughter.
Riley looks up at them from the ground, she'd tackled Lucas and sat on him, and the cherry to that sundae was that she'd stuffed his mouth with popcorn. Meanwhile Lucas looked defeated. In reality though, he was in heaven. Riley not only said hello to him like they used to but she was also so close to him again; she was sitting on him for Gods sake. Their closeness was electric, it was almost palpable. He was so dazed with her closeness that she had managed to over power him but Lucas knew that even if he wasn't so distracted he would have let her win. Unfortunately the dream had to come to a crashing end.
"Help me!" She said to Charlie in a shy voice. He held out his hand and he helped her up. But Riley being Riley had to get caught on Lucas's shoe, and fall over, Right. Into. Charlie's. Arms.
"Oh!" Riley said when Charlie caught her at the last moment.
"Woah....You know you are so beautiful upside down..." He said in response. As the two looked into each others eyes, Maya noticed a couple of things. First she noticed that despite Charlie and Riley's obvious perfection there was something off about them, something that she didn't want for her best friend. Secondly she noticed her date looking at them with a face so blank it screamed that he was hiding something, perhaps that he wished to be the one holding Riley.Thirdly she realized that it didn't seem to bother her that maybe Lucas still had feelings for Riley... So what did that mean for Maya's feelings about Lucas? Did Maya actually push her best friend towards another guy with out knowing her own feelings...?
