"Yes, Riley. Of course I like Maya, she's like no one else I've ever met. I mean even when you two were younger, she was always tough. She got a glimpse of the world and how it could be, she knew the world since you were kids and she didn't let that make her bitter. She had every reason to go dark and she never let that happen because you were there and you needed her, but she needed you too. She is a force of nature. I guess I thought she'd always be there... waiting for me."
"Josh..."
"It was stupid of me. She's amazing, of course someone else would see that. I was just so comfortable, I mean I didn't see her hoping onto Lucas's back too."
"Mmm"
"What?" Josh says. Riley gives him a meaningful look.
"Seriously! How'd I miss that?"
"It was during school when Lucas was going to hurt Farkle's bully, Maya just hoped on his back to stop him. It was very affective, I guess having someone on your back is very distracting."
"Ya think?"
Riley laughs uncomfortably.
"I'm sorry uncle Josh, I wish you would have told me how you felt... That way I could have helped."
"Yeah. Hey, Riley?"
"Yes?"
"Why did you do this?... Even now when Lucas seemed annoyed with me because of Maya, I could tell it's you he cares about. I mean the look on his face when Charlie said he was your boyfriend " Josh blow out air through his mouth, "he was obviously angry... And when I said Charles instead of Charlie he almost laughed out loud. Lucas likes you, Riley. How could you ever doubt that?"
"I just think he likes Maya too."
"I think you are tying to make your best friend happy and you aren't realizing that it takes two. Lucas has to want Maya too, Riley and he doesn't. He may care about her but he doesn't like her that way..."
"Are you sure you aren't saying this for your own benefit?"
"Of course! Do you know how unfair it would be of me to ruin Maya's happiness with someone else, when she was always so true to me? I had my chance and I blew it... Well maybe, because when Lucas wakes up from this nightmare, he'll realize he needs to fight for you Riley."
"We'll see about that..." Riley mutters
