CHAPTER TWO: FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Rather hesitantly, I followed the receptionist down a specifically narrow corridor and towards a broadened glass elevator that reminded me slightly of the one from Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, though I highly doubted I'd spot Willy Wonka anytime soon. The unpleasant woman I'd barely been acquainted with gestured for me to stand in the elevator. There wasn't any chance of me disagreeing with her or even trying to defend myself as equal, I just followed her basic instruction. I turned around once in, expecting her to be beside me but instead she stood just outside the door and began to give me directions, ones that I'd never be able to grasp.
"Right, you need to head up to the top floor, go right, walk down the corridor and you'll see a set of glass doors. Walk through them and then turn left. Then you need to-"
Suddenly the elevator doors began to seal themselves together like they were driven by some magnetic forcefield. I began to push them back ever so strongly so that I could retrieve the instructions from the woman, but apparently I didn't have the strength to stop them closing, and by the time they were almost shut I had to yank my hand out of the seal to make sure that I'd definitely have a hand for the interview, which I classed as pretty important.
"Wait!" I exclaimed as the doors shut instantly. Great, I was left on my own. How the hell would I be able to figure out how to find my way around now? My mind began to lose itself in a daze of utter confusion.
Why didn't the receptionist try and hold the door open for me?
Did she want me to lose my way?
Did everyone want me to lose my way?
I pressed the plastic, laser-like button for the very top floor as I tried to wipe the suspicion and curiosity off my still bruised shoulder from the incident outside. I felt the back of my head - if all of this has happened to me since I've arrived, how on earth am I going to survive a day here, let alone a lifetime? My feet began to numb themselves so that I wouldn't be able to walk. Not knowing if it was because of the intensity from the worry or because of my mad dash around the City, I started to stomp my foot on the floor to hopefully gain some feeling again. Before I had a moment to remind myself of what the receptionist said, I heard an alarming bell ring and then the elevator doors opened, welcoming me to reality.
My body remained glued against the back walls of the elevator and I quickly stopped my foot movements, not wanting to look like a complete fool. This was it - my only chance of getting into the fashion industry. Was that a good thing or a bad thing? I didn't know. I could only wonder from now on what the future would hold.
Taking a deep breath, I took a step out of the elevator, contemplating for a moment whether it was the right choice, but I knew I had to arrive at some point. I was already five minutes late, I didn't want to push my luck. Not now, not ever.
I stood beside the elevator for a second catching my breath. I wasn't running or even making any swift movements so I had absolutely no idea why I was finding it so difficult to grab a breath - perhaps it was the panic, or fear of possible failure. I stood in some sort of entryway, lined with miscellaneous style desks and silver coated trays holding champagne glasses topped with red wine. My favourite. People sat at these desks, answering phones, filing and sending faxes. It seemed too stylish, modern, classy and elegant for an entryway. Perhaps this wasn't where I was supposed to be.
