I forgot how much I missed it up here. The smell. The view. The way it doesn't matter if you take you're shoes off at the door, or if you wear them inside. The way no one cares if you spill in the middle of the living room, because the carpet is old anyway. The carefree and fun atmosphere.
It was just what I needed.
After I had brought all of my stuff into the cottage, I headed out the back door to the deck overlooking the small lake. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the fresh air. The family cottage was like my very own piece of heaven on earth. It was my very favorite place to be in the whole wide world.
And for a moment, I no longer felt the emptiness within me. The constant pain I had felt for the past 4 months subsided, and she was standing next too me, walking with me down to the dock to feel the temperature of the water, just like we always did.
I barley made it to the very end of the thin dock before I broke down crying as reality hit me. She was gone, and just when I think I can handle it, the guilt and the pain and the heartache washes over me, everytime.
Losing a sister is like losing a part of yourself. She was so young, and I was supposed to teach her, and stand up for her, and protect her. But instead I failed her.
They tell me it wasn't my fault. That I couldn't have changed the outcome, I couldn't have stopped that car from pulling out in front of us. But I just keep thinking, why couldn't it have been me?
I was lost, deep in thought as I watched the sunset, that I didn't hear my mom come up behind me. She sat down next to me, and I quickly whiped my eyes. I don't let my parents, or anyone, see me cry. They have enough pain of their own, they don't need to worry about mine.
"She loved this place", I didn't have to ask her who she was talking about. I just nodded, not trusting myself to talk just yet, in fear of another breakdown. She must have sensed that I didn't want to talk about it, because she quickly changed the subject.
"Did you see that someone bought the place next door?" she asked.
"No, I didn't notice" I whispered, only half paying attention.
"Me and your father are going over there tomorrow morning, to introduce ourselves," she continued,"you could join us if you'd like."
"Maybe", She could tell I wasn't going to say much more, so she kissed my forehead, and left me alone once again.
