Emily POV

I barely remember leaving.

When I woke up, I realized that I had to learn about my powers. How did I get them? Who are the Nightingales, and what did they want with me? How did I come to have demonic blood? I hoped that the Nightingales could help me answer at least a few of these questions.

That's why I left.

Earlier that morning, I dove throw the internet trying to find their location. At last, on some dark corner of the internet, I found it.

A poster on the black market stated:

ASSASSINS NEEDED

COME TO BLACK ROCK CAVE AT 5 O' CLOCK IN THE MORNING FOR YOUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT

IF YOU SURVIVE, YOU WILL JOIN THE NIGHTINGALES FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

It sounded promising, so I left the tower at four hoping to get there a little early to talk to one of the members before my "first assignment."

Somehow, even though I left early and teleported for rooftop to rooftop, I got their with only five minutes to spare. I stood at the entrance of the cave and watched as two others arrived. At tall, dark skinned girl arrived directly after me, and a very young boy arrived soon after her.

I stared at them, wondering why they had chosen to become assassins. Perhaps it was for answers, like me? And why was such a young boy here? He looked to be about 10, such a young soul to be tarnished by blood.

I checked my watch. A minute to go, and no one else was in sight. I didn't want to join the Nightingales, but it seemed as if it was the only way I would get answers. I spent the next minute sizing up my opponents.

The girl seemed to be about my age at 16 or 17, with dark brown hair tied in a high ponytail and bronze skin. She must have been at least six feet five with thin lean muscles hidden under a black full body leotard. She had knee high black boots and a sheath slung over her shoulder that looked like it held a katana.

The boy however, seemed to have nothing that made him look threatening. His blonde hair and olive green eyes looked so strikingly similar to my own that for a split second I thought he might be somehow related to me. I chased away that thought when I realized that I very well might have to fight him. I looked him over again and noticed a slight bulge under his shirt by his waist, indicating a hidden weapon of some kind. Maybe he's not as ill-prepared as I thought.

Finally, the waiting was over. I glanced at the cave to see one of the ever elusive Nightingales appear.

He was slightly above average in height, with spiky white hair and dark red eyes. His outfit consisted of exactly the same material mine was, but almost completely black. The Nightingale symbol decorated his back, in a gray just barely lighter than the black surrounding it. Muscles bulged under the fabric, and I desperately hoped that I didn't have to fight him.

"Welcome, Cadets!" He smiled. His teeth seemed to be sharpened, giving him a wolfish appearance. "Today, you will have either joined us, died, or walked away. If you are having any second thoughts, please, feel free to leave."

He waited a moment, then, deciding that we had made our decision, gestured to the looming entrance. "Please follow me. The First Task will be assigned to you soon."

We followed him into the cave slowly.

My eyes took a while to the dim lighting in the cave, but I soon made out some of its features. It was quite a big space with small puddles dotting the floor, water dripping from the stalactites above. The Nightingale led us to the center and gave us our first assignment.
