chapter four;

after we got peace at danielle's place, i took a long warm bath and thought. i thought of ashton, and if he actually did do this.

it's too late now, i thought. plus, all of the pieces and evidence from the night had pointed straight to him. the night of jessie's murder, he hadn't texted me back all night, like i mentioned. when ashton snuck into my room that night, he said he was watching the exorcist. but he could've easily texted me. maybe that was his own way of giving me a hint of where he really was that night.

i finished up in the bathroom quickly because i knew how impatient dani was when it came to watching her favorite films.

she decided the mood wasn't right for magic mike, so we watched a classic— mean girls.

it was my all-time favorite movie, plus i'm sure it will help get my mind off of everything that had happened tonight.

what will people at school think?

i tried to tell myself i won't listen to them, but i knew i eventually would. everything people say gets to me. especially after the past year. first my mother, now this? can life get any worse?

"god i loved it, 'i'll send you a copy!' bam bitch went down. 'i'll send you a copy!' bam, right in the face— super bitch! you're so cool." she laughed, punching the air, mimicking my actions like she was punching someone.

david came in right afterwards. "thought you might want some ice for that hook." he laughed, tossing an ice pack to me.

"thanks," i said, putting the ice on my hand.

"get some sleep," he smiled and walked out of the room, closing the door.

danielle flips him off, when he turned around. "you really think ashton did it?" she looked back at me.

"he was there dani." i shrugged, playing with the stuffed rabbit on her bed.

"he was destined to have a flaw. i knew he was too perfect." she shook her head looking back at the tv.

danielle's mom, known as mrs. ross came in. "the phone, honey."

"who is it? we're busy mom." dani sighs.

"it's for eve." she looks at me.

"take a message. bye." danielle shoo's her mom away.

"it's fine dani. i'll get it. my dad?" i asked as i stood up.

"i don't think so," mrs. ross replied.

i walk out of the room to answer the phone, with a confused look on my face.

"hey, dad?" i ask, holding the cold phone to my ear.

"hello evelyn." the same deep voice i had heard only a few hours before echoed through the receiver.

"no!" i scream, cupping a hand over my mouth. danielle comes running by my side.

"poor ashton. an innocent guy doesn't stand a chance with you." he sighs.

"leave me alone," i said through gritted teeth as a tear ran down my cheek.

"looks like you got the wrong guy, again! first jason, now ashton?" he made a tsk-ing sound on the other line.

"who are you?" i squinted my eyes slightly.

"you'll find out soon enough. i promise." i could almost see the smirk on the person's face.

he hung up just as david came in the kitchen. "what?" david asked, confused.

"what? what did he say?" dani asked.

the next morning the tv was on, and it started a news report just as i walked into the kitchen.

"Evelyn McAdams escaped a vicious attack last night. Evelyn is the daughter of Tammy McAdams who was brutally murdered last year, by convicted murderer Jason Mace, who broke into the home, and savagely raped and tortured the deceased woman. Jason Mace is now waiting for the death sentence handed down by young Evelyn after she testified against him. She was the key witness in the state's case against—"

mrs. ross turned the tv off once she saw me walk in, giving me an apologetic look.

"it will never stop will it?" i sighed, not really speaking to anyone.

david walked in, putting a hand on my shoulder. "ashton was released this morning. his cellular bill was clean, he didn't make those calls. but we're checking all cellular accounts in the county. any calls made to you or jessie max are being cross-referenced. it will take some time, but we'll catch him." he assured me.

dani looks at me. "you okay?"

i nod, but i was definitely not okay.

the rest of the morning went on smoothly, to say the least. me and dani shared some pancakes mrs. ross made and as always, they were delicious. i loved coming here, dani's mom reminded me of my own. i missed having my mom around, kissing me goodnight and waking me up with the smell of bacon and eggs. my dad has been pretty devastated as well, finding out my mother was having an "affair" the whole time. and it sucked hearing the rumors after she died, if they were true she didn't even get to tell us herself. but a part of me wondered if she would've actually told us, or was going to lie the rest of her life about it.
