Lyra was beginning to feel, against all odds, that fighting an awesome boss for control of a universe while using amazing powers was beginning to feel like actual work. She was covered in sweat. It got into her eyes and stung like heck. Her glasses felt like they were always falling off-- she was starting to understand why people had those dorky chains on their glasses.

Even though the Boss was taking a beating, it was also wearing them out. And the crow people above had been occasionally cawing about cooking. Lyra was getting tired.

Roxy was pounding away at the Boss with all sorts of attacks. Most of the time, Lyra could barely even see what she was doing.

Lyra landed back on a building. She felt her spine crunch as she hit the roof, then reknit. She felt like a doll that just kept getting stitched up, over and over and over again. She supposed that she should be really dead right now. She was supposed to be fighting to save the universe.

Lyra sighed and got back up. She knew that wasn't true. She wasn't fighting for Eldwyne, or Andesine, or anything really. She was fighting because it was fun. And now, well... she was getting bored.

Roxy didn't seem to get bored. Lyra didn't know where she pulled all that anger from.

Lyra summoned another character and told them about the Boss. Just the bare details this time-- bad guy, help me defeat them. Then she sat down for a second and just watched.

The Boss looked tired, too. It couldn't heal itself in the middle of battle, and Roxy had been slowly eating away towards its heart. Winter was working on the throat, Benny was blinding it (again), and Andesine and Ananda were running around on the round, slicing at its ankles like fire ants. Lyra was going for the hands and wrists, but she thought she should change it up.

Lyra stood up and summoned John. Her other key guardian disappeared as she flew to the top of the Boss's head, where a forest of spikes awaited her. She let John leave before summoning her demigod self again, and the two of them began to clean up shop.

When the Boss finally fell, Benny was definitely not expecting it.

They were all drenched in sweat and blood, some of it their own, some of it the Boss's. Benny had been going for one last strike on the Boss's forehead (which he had whittled down almost to the bone) when it suddenly collapsed. He heard Andesine and Ananda yelling and moving aside as the Boss fell, and jumped off. Roxy caught all of them in a gust of wind and lowered them to the ground. The crows descended upon the body.

They sat in a circle, trying not to listen to the disgusting noises produced by the crows eating.

"I'm McFreakin' tired," Lyra said at last. "Let's go take a nap--"

Another wave of unreality struck. They were all kindergarteners. Lyra had just enough time to say "Hey, sweet," before it was gone again.

"I don't think that we have time," Benny said, yawning. "We've got to get out. I mean, the universe is collapsing."

"C'mon, Bennt-outta-shape," Lyra groaned. "It's like, the middle of the night and we were all just fighting a monster. Can't we just hang out in the TARDIS for a while?"

"I think the Boss fell on it," Benny admitted.

They sat there.

"We could try to find my portal again," Roxy said. "I think it's about a month's journey from here."

"We don't have that much time," Benny replied. "Okay. One night of sleep, and then we've gotta get out of here oh, great."

They were all birds.

This time it lasted almost five minutes, and when it was over, they all sighed with relief. Then they curled up and fell asleep.
