She was scared.
History was going to repeat itself. Patricia had again agreed to go to America with Eddie. This time she was cautious, as was he. She was falling, fast, it was the same as last year.
During the day they'd go out to the park or amusements or bowling or some other cheesy couple cliché. In secret they both liked it this way. It wasn't as if they'd be seeing these people again for a long time so they had nothing to lose.
He had managed to get accepted into the same college as her so the distance wouldn't be a problem. She was really glad of this.
Today they were having another argument. The first week or two his mother became seriously worried and thought they were going to break up again but they soon explained they felt it better to have a slow stream of anger rather that one big fight with hurtful words and things that could not be taken back. She found it strange but there was logic behind it. After all she and her husband had divorced not long after the birth of Eddie so she couldn't give much advice. They had a large fight and they were both too hurt to attempt to repair whatever was left of their relationship.
"I cannot believe you would say that," Patricia groaned. "Oh come Yacker, not like you've never said worse things than this," he argued and they just turned around. They both draped their legs over the arm of the couch with their backs facing each other and arms crossed.
Sooner or later something would make them laugh and they'd both fall back so their faces were centimetres apart. They both found it was always the best part of the argument as they would then turn their head to face each other and indulge in a very prolonged display of affection.
Usually he would move up slowly then quickly manoeuvre her so she was laying on top of him in a movement so precise they were only parted for mere seconds. Today was no different. As they kissed his hands began to massage the small amount of skin that appeared the the base of her spine.
She felt and overwhelming flash of courage. "I 'luff' you," she said so only he could possibly hear. "I 'luff' you too," he replied. He was well aware the term love frightened her but this was the first time she had ever said anything along those lines. Even a substitute for the word filled him with everlasting happiness.
She felt it. That was enough for him. Just to know she felt the same way he did when they were together. He wanted to be with her forever. Even in death he wanted to be buried beside her, holding her hand. He just didn't even want to consider the thought of not being able to hold her and kiss her and love her.
The thing with them was that he knew how afraid she was to fall in love. Her parents always fought and they were never happy together and then she discovered that his parents were divorced. She thought maybe that unhappiness was a hereditary thing. He knew how hard it must have been for her even to say that.
-awkward turtle line break-
That night she was lying beside him in his bed. Her head was against his chest and their legs were were entangled under the sheets. Suddenly as they lay there she felt it. Her snitch was going mad and her head kept replaying their kisses. This was it.
"I love you."
She bit her lip as soon as she said it. It had been three days since she admitted to 'luffing' him. It was true though, she did love him.
"I love you too."
They both felt more relaxed now they admitted how they really felt. Maybe going to America wasn't so bad after all.
