It's been almost 7 years since you and L met. Over that extensive amount of time, you had become rather good friends. He was your first and only friend, and you couldn't help but feel that he was the same way. It was nice having someone to talk to once in a while, but over the last years, you had started not liking living at the orphanage. Not at all. Your grades were on the lower side of mediocre, which you were picked on for. Everyone else here were geniuses. you felt you never did anything right, and above all, you just felt you didn't fit in with everyone else. You were grateful for having a roof over your head, food to eat, and the adults here were caring and overall amazing people...but still, the helpless feeling of not being able to see your place here really got at you. Every day seemed to get harder and harder, and all you wanted to do was get out of here. L was the only person keeping you from leaving, other than the fact that you had nowhere to go. You didn't want to abandon your only friend, and without him you were certain you would fail the school year. You thought about what to do about this as you poked at your dinner absently, just staring into space.

"You've been very quiet today."

A voice snaps you out of thought, and you dart your head up and see L. He was staring at you questioningly, with his head slightly cocked to one side.

"Hm? O-oh, it's nothing. Don't worry about it."

He hums briefly in disapproval, and brings his thumb to his mouth as he sits across from you, just as always.

"I know that's not true (y/n). I can tell by your body language you're quite deep in thought about something. Plus you didn't bring your sketchbook downstairs today. You always do. What made you forget?"

God, how come he's always right about everything?

You think as you look back at him. You sigh, thinking of some kind of excuse.

"You always over analyze everything. I just didn't feel like bringing it today. All I was thinking about was what's for breakfast tomorrow morning."

You cringe at what you just said. What's for breakfast? That's the best thing you could come up with? Did you really think he was going to buy that?

"Tell me the truth."

You sigh, knowing you weren't going to win a battle with a walking polygraph machine, and decide to just say what was on your mind. L wasn't one to judge, at least not that you knew of. He rarely expressed much emotion for that matter, and you could never tell what he was thinking or feeling exactly, but one thing was for sure- he could read you like a book, no matter what. You may as well just talk, because he would keep persisting if you didn't.

"Can I....ask you something?"

You say, avoiding eye contact. He looked up with questioning in his eyes, and began chewing on his thumbnail.

"Yes...?"

He answered in the monotone way he always does. There was a tinge of interest in his tone, and you knew now there was no backing out of saying what you were thinking.

"Have you....have you ever had a day where nothing seems to be going right, and you feel like no matter what you do, you just won't fit in?"

He tilts his head a little, analyzing what you just said.

"Yes.."

He finally answers. It took you by surprise, you were almost 90% sure he would say no.

"...Have you ever felt that way for years?"
