"Goku, wake up!" Goku's eyes snapped open, looking around at the suddenly bright room. Chichi was already dressed for the day, glaring at Goku with her hands on her hips. "It's time to wake up, I've already got breakfast ready!" Goku sat up, groaning. He had a huge headache; he had never slept in long enough for Chichi to have breakfast made.
"I'll be there in a minute," he said, rubbing his head. Chichi frowned and left the room. Goku sighed, then suddenly became very aware that the dream he just had had excited him. "What was that all about...?" he asked himself, feeling his heart beating very fast. He laughed nervously to himself, cursing his wild imagination. He got up, grabbed some clothes from his dresser, and went into the bathroom to take a quick, cold shower.
Goku got undressed and turned on the water as cold as he could stand it, stepping in and letting the water hit his face first, eyes closed. When he closed his eyes he saw the image of Vegeta kissing him, and his eyes snapped opened again. His face felt hot, and most of all, he felt confused. He shook it off and proceeded to wash his hair.
When Goku was finished with his shower and dressed, he went into the kitchen where Chichi had already set breakfast. Goten was already almost finished eating his own plate. Goku sat down and stared at his food.
"Morning dad," said Goten as he finished. Goku smiled weakly.
"Morning..." he muttered. He slowly began eating. Goten frowned, watching his father's abnormal behavior. Chichi took Goten's empty plate, watching Goku curiously.
"What's wrong Goku?" she asked. "It's not like you to eat so slowly."
"Uh, I guess I'm just not very hungry this morning," Goku replied. Chichi furrowed her brow, as did Goten.
"Not hungry?" she asked, perplexed. "Are you feeling okay?" She pressed her forearm to his forehead to check if he had a fever. "You're not warm... maybe you should take it easy today."
"I was planning to go to Kame House today," said Goku, another image of his dream popping in his head. He slowly set his fork down, losing the rest of his apetite.
"I think you should just stay home," Chichi suggested. Goku stood up.
"No no, I'm fine," Goku said with a fake smile. "I think I just need some air. I'll see you later, okay?" Chichi frowned, but nodded slowly. Goku waved as he left the house. Once outside, he took to the air and flew as fast as he could to Kame House. Maybe being with his friends would distract him from that dream.
Goku flew over the ocean to the tiny island with the little house sitting on it. He landed in front of the door and walked in.
"Hey everyone!" he said enthusiastically, waving. He blinked, looking around the room. There was a chess board set up in the middle of the room. Krillan and Bulma were seated at it, in the middle of a game, and Master Roshi, Yamcha, Puar, Tien, Chiaotzu, and, of course, Vegeta, were watching them. Goku's stomach did a flip when he saw Vegeta, who was watching Bulma and Krillan with his usual pissed off expression on his face. He was leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed. He didn't even look up when Goku walked in. Everyone else however, turned their heads and welcomed Goku happily.
"We're having a chess battle!" said Chiaotzu excitedly. Goku ignored the butteflies in his stomach and walked in, sitting in a chair.
"Great! Who is winning so far?" asked Goku, masking the nervousness in his voice.
"I am," said Bulma, smiling. Krillan laughed.
"Don't get cocky, Bulma," he said. He moved one of his pieces near Bulma's king. "Check mate!" Bulma gasped, and she growled, standing up and turning away from the board.
"Whatever! You probably cheated!" she said angrily.
"You're just being a sore loser," said Krillan. "Come on, who's next?" Vegeta smirked and stood up, taking a seat at the chess board.
"Time to show you how the game is played," he hissed.
"What? I didn't know you knew how to play chess, Vegeta," said Krillan, frowning.
"Saiyan warriors were not just trained in battle, but also in mental skill," Vegeta replied. "Make your move before I lose my patience." Krillan furrowed his brow and moved a pawn forward two spaces. Goku watched as they played, mainly paying attention to Vegeta. It was summer, so Vegeta was wearing a sleeveless shirt, and Goku couldn't help but admire the muscles in his arms. He suddenly became aware of his thoughts, and shook them away. Minutes went by as a majority of the room cheered on Krillan, and Vegeta was cheered on by Bulma.
"Check mate," said Vegeta finally. Krillan threw his hands in the air.
"Aw, come on!" he exclaimed. Vegeta smirked, chuckling.
"Get out of that chair, short stop," he said triumphantly. "Who wants to lose to me next?" He looked around the room as people were hesitant to volunteer. Vegeta's eyes met Goku's. "Kakarot, play me." Goku blushed slightly.
"Uh, I've only played chess a few times," he said, stuttering. "I'm not very good..."
"All the better," said Vegeta, smirking. "Sit down so I can beat you."
"It'd be the first time Vegeta actually beat Goku at something..." Yamcha muttered, and everyone chuckled slightly.
"Hey!" Vegeta yelled as Goku sat across from him.
"Oh just shut up and play," said Tien. Vegeta frowned and turned to face Goku.
"Move," he demanded. Goku smiled nervously and moved his knight forward. Vegeta blinked. "Who the hell moves their knight first?" Goku shrugged.
"That's just something I've always done," he replied. "That's allowed right? Knights are allowed to go past other pieces?" Vegeta sighed, nodding. He moved a pawn like he always did.
"I may not be able to beat you in battle, Kakarot, but maybe I can beat you in a game of logic," he growled. Goku smiled.
"Maybe, maybe not," he said, moving another piece.
"Face it, Kakarot, you're not very intelligent," Vegeta sneered. Goku frowned.
"That's not very nice," he replied. Vegeta laughed. They continued taking turns moving their pieces. They were taking each other's pieces quickly, and eventually Goku was down to only a few left. Vegeta laughed.
"You should just give up now," he said. Goku blinked.
"Why should I give up? I still have five pieces left," he said innocently.
"There's no way you can win with so few left! Are you stupid? Oh wait..." He smirked, watching Goku carefully. Goku's eyes fell to the board. It was his turn to move, but he couldn't decide where to go. He examined each of his pieces that were left on the board, simulating in his mind what would happen to each of them if he moved them. Vegeta still had his queen, and Goku didn't. The queen was the main problem, since she could move in any direction... which piece to move? The rook? No, that could be taken so easily... he could move his bishop, but that would be taken as well. He didn't dare move his king... he had a knight and a pwan left, but the knight could be taken by Vegeta's queen... and the pawn...
Goku gasped suddenly, and grabbed his pawn, moving it one space forward, which was very close to Vegeta's king.
"Check mate!" Goku shouted happily. Vegeta blinked, eyes widening.
"What!? No way!" he said angrily, and stared at the board. It so happened that all of Goku's pieces were surrounding Vegeta's king, so that the other pieces could take it if Goku had gone for that. Moving the pawn had indeed put it in check mate. "You idiot! You forgot to say 'check' when you put my king in danger!"
"Oh, was I supposed to do that? I didn't know," said Goku, laughing slightly. Vegeta growled angrily, standing and hitting the board, which went tumbling to the floor.
"THAT'S IT!!" he shouted. "I can't even beat you at CHESS! I'm going to KILL you!"
"Vegeta, come on! It's just a game!" said Bulma, but Vegeta didn't listen. He launched himself at Goku, who dodged, eyes wide.
"Hey! Don't fight in here!" said Master Roshi. "You'll destroy my house! Take it somewhere else!" Vegeta panted, glaring at Goku.
"Fine! Come on then!" Vegeta stormed out of the house. Goku hesitated, looking around at his friends. Krillan sighed.
"Just go beat him and get it over with, Goku," he said. "Humor him." Goku shrugged and followed Vegeta outside, and they both took flight. Goku followed Vegeta to an area far away from Kame House at the edge of the ocean. They landed on the ground here, facing each other.
