disclaimer;

if there is any similarities to the book or movie, that's probably because that's where I got it from. James Dashner owns everyone except Evelyn, Felix, and a couple others.

I let out a shaky breath and nodded, my heart pounding rapidly in my chest. My hands became clammy and I sighed, hoping I was as prepared as I needed to be to see him. I turned to Aiden, who nodded at me. It was a short lived moment, broken when Jorge let out a shout, letting us know it was time to get back to the Berg.

"Are you feeling okay?" Gally asked, walking next to me.

I nodded.

"I'm nervous," I admitted.

"How was he, before you had to leave," Gally asked quietly.

"He had a temper," I started. "and he was agressive and moody. He was so different than in the Glade and in the Scorch. The caring, sensible Newt was gone. But whenever I touched him, he was better. His heart calmed and his temper diminished."

"I really am sorry, Evelyn. I know how much you meant to each other," Gally said quietly.

I shrugged.

"He still means everything to me," I admitted.

I looked up at him and I gripped his hand, surprising him.

"Sorry," I muttered. "I just need to know someone will listen."

He squeezed my hand.

"I'll always be here, Evelyn. And so will Minho and Newt, no matter what."

I smiled up at him and felt my heart rate quicken as we turned down the familiar alleyway where our Berg had been left behind. I immediately grabbed my gun the holster, cli8cking it into place and raising up.  I knew even if Newt attacked me in some way, I could never shoot him.

I was first to reach the door of the Berg, Gally and Aiden behind me. With shaky hands, I reached forward and  grasped the handle, pulling it open and moving in front of the door, gun raised.  No noises were heard and I slowly felt dread trickle into my stomach.

"Newt?" I called.

I relaxed and climbed into the Berg, hearing a few shouts of disagreement. I turned around once I was in.

"Just let me do this."

No one seemed particularly overjoyed that I was going in first with someone who was potentially dangerous, but I wasn't scared for my safety, I was scared of what I would find when I met Newt.  I swung in and clicked my gun into place as I inched forward, gun held high.

"Newt?" I called. "It's Evie. We're here."

My heart pounded in my chest at the silence, making unease creep into my stomach.

"I'm coming in, Evelyn," I heard Gally shout.

I picked up the pace and entered the amall area where I had last seen Newt, stomach flipping when he wasn't here.

"Newt?" I breathed out frantically.

I took a few shaky breaths, trying to keep myself from freaking out.

"He's not here," I called out, hearing footsteps move quickly.

I moved around, eyes darting around for any sign of him, but came up empty handed. Then I saw it, a piece of paper tucked into a small crack in the equipment.
