This song always makes me cry
Noelle P.O.V.
Michael, are you there? Can we meet?
I sat there at my laptop, one hand on my stomach and the other on the keyboard. I anxiously looked at the screen, waiting for Mikey to read my message.
I started to fall asleep when I heard a ping come from my laptop. I looked at the message, only to be disappointed with his response.
I'd love to, but Bethany's parents are taking us out to dinner at the Hazel. How cool is that?
I furiously typed at the keyboard. I was mad. Mad that Michael was never available. Mad that he was always with Bethany. Mad that I got myself pregnant.
REALLY! WELL FUCK BETHANY! FUCK HER SUPER COOL PARENTS, FUCK THE HAZEL -- AND FUCK YOU!!
I looked at the message that I was about to send. My finger found the backspace key instead of enter. I watched the message start to go away, until it was was blank once again.
Okay. Enjoy the meal.
I closed my laptop, went to my bed, and cried myself to sleep.
---
I sat at the table of the cafe that Mikey and I planned on meeting at. I started picking at the wax of the candle in front of me, watching the little flaked fall to the table.
Michael ran in with a piece of paper in his hand and took a seat at the table.
"Sorry that I'm late Elle. But, I've got news!"
"Um me too."
"Here, read this." he said, sliding an envelope across the table towards me. I picked the already opened envelope up and took the paper out.
Congratulations Michael Clifford. We are happy to inform you that we have a spot here for you at Harvard University. Not only that, but we have a 50 thousand dollar scholarship for you as well...
"Oh my god. Michael, that's great! Congrats!"
"I know right! It's unbelievable! Have you heard back from Boston College yet?"
"Uh, no."
"Well I know that you'll get in."
"How do you think Bethany will react when you tell her?"
"Oh her? She'll be fine. She has this thing about my hair."
"Okay, okay. I didn't come here to talk about your sex life. Don't you think that she'll care about you rushing and leaving the country?"
"Alright, what is it?"
"What?"
"You're defending Bethany. That's a first. So what's wrong Elle?"
"Nothing. Nothing's wrong."
"But you sound depressed. You should be happy. I'm on my way to Boston!"
"I know it's really fantastic, well done."
"You're coming too Elle. My flight's in three days. So that means that I'll have time to settle in before the semester starts. You need to go ahead and book your ticket."
"Sure, I've got some stuff to sort first. But, I'll be there."
---
"Don't get blown up by terrorists."
"Okay?"
"Or lose pressure and fall out of the sky."
"Elle, nothing's gonna-"
"Or fly into a flock of birds. I mean it!"
"Elle, I can delay it if you need me to." he said. I looked at him and I thought about it. I really didn't want Mikey to leave, but I also didn't want to be the reason why he doesn't get to achieve his dream.
"No, you're getting on that plane." He dropped his bags and faced towards me.
"I've got something for you. Close your eyes. C'monnnn Elle, close 'em!" I laughed at him and slowly closed my eyes, wondering what he has.
"Give me your finger okay." he said, grabbing my index finger. He let go, and I heard him fidgeting with something.
"Keep it there." I felt something moving, but when it touched the pad of my finger, it stopped. I instantly knew what it was.
I opened my eyes to see a little globe, and my finger on a destination. Mikey and I would always do this on the globe in his room.
I looked down and read the name.
"North America." He smiled down at me and put the globe in my hand. He clasped both of his hands around mine, brushing his thumbs against the back of my hand.
I got on my tippy toes and wrapped my arms around Mikey's neck. I breathed in the smell of his cologne, a smell that would be gone for a long time.
"I'm going to miss you Mikey," I mumbled into his neck.
"And I'll miss you more." He tightened his grip on me and we rocked back and forth, both of our eyes closed. It was like it was only me and Michael.
We slowly started to break apart, neither of us wanted to let go. I held his face, looking at every part of it. From his cherry stained lips to his beautiful green eyes.
"Keep in touch, okay?"
"Okay." he whispered. He grabbed his bags off the ground and looked back at me.
"See you in two weeks." he said, slowly walking backwards towards the man waiting to see his ticket. He smiled and waved bye before turning around and handing the man his ticket.
I watched him leave, and I felt the tears starting to roll down my face.
"Hey, Elle!" he called. I looked up to see him with a goofy smile on his face.
"Don't cry okay? We'll see each other soon, I promise." he said. Michael waved goodbye one last time before walking out of my sight.
