It almost tore her when she got the black envelope. Her name was written nicely in a lovely hand writing she recognized. Shaking she dropped against the wall and opened the letter delicately. Pulling the contents out, she let out a sigh at the bold letters that stared back at her.
The Spencer Family is sad to announce the passing
of
Reece Anne Spencer
A service is being held on Tuesday the 3rd of October at Green Mountain Cemetery
at 10 am. Followed by a light lunch at the Spencer’s Residence.
Bringing her shaking hand up to rest on her forehead she ignored the scraping of the card against her forehead. Could she even make it to the service without breaking down the moment she saw Reece’s family. Would they make her speak? Tell the horrid story of what happened to their beloved daughter. Would they hate her? For not being able to save her. Would they blame her for how she died? Would they stare at her in wonder of how she’s still alive and Reece’s not. Thousands of thoughts ran through her shattering mind as she closed her eyes. The hollowness in her chest grew at the thought of seeing no body, no ashes. Just an empty box they wish they could put the remains of their perfect daughter in. But they couldn’t. There was no body to be found. It was burned to nothing. To emptiness. Almost as if she had never existed. Hearing keys jiggle outside her door she tried to block out all noises. She wanted to hear nothing. Feeling nothing but empty coldness but it never worked. The one thing that always broke through her barrier walked straight through her door with a bag of groceries.
Walking in with a smile that maybe his baby girl was doing better today than she was the past few days his smile dropped as he saw her on the floor with her back leant against the wall. Her face was pained as a white and black card was against her forehead gripped in her shaking hand.
“ Baby girl?” he asked worriedly. Setting down the bag of food and hydrates he had bought for her apartment since she refused to leave her home he set the spare key she gave him next to it. Sitting next to her he lightly took the card from her hand. Grabbing her hand and interlacing their fingers he sighed before reading the card in his hand. Realization instantly streaked across him. It was Reece’s memorial card. Of course they would send it right away. They were after all waiting on Brecken’s recovery before planning it. Looking over at Brecken his heart shattered into more than a million pieces. Her face was pale. Her eyes distant but still crying and her body was stiller than a statue.
“ It’s in two days” he said lightly. Nodding her head Brecken let out a heaved sigh before switching her distant eyes to his in a pleading manner. “ Don’t make me go” she begged, her eyes drawing him in like a single star on a dark night.
“You have to go baby girl, she was your best friend” he argued, although it was in a light tone. Seeing tears shed more and more down her face his heart clenched and his lungs started to suffocate. She was doing so well. Not crying as much. She had been holding herself together better than the first night. But now all that work was going down the slippery drains and falling into a hole of despair. Pulling her so she was sat on his lap her face facing his he rose an eyebrow at her.
