Chapter 6
I had gone through what I was going to do several times in my mind and decided that it was a good idea.
"Hey, Haley!" I yelled out to Haley. Finally she turned around and walked over to me.
"What!" She was definitely not happy.
"I was wondering if you could give this note to Eliza because...you know...she trusts you and I trust you. But please don't read it."
"Uh...okay then. When do you want me to give it to her?"
"As soon as possible." I watched her walk off. I slowly turned and walked over to the edge of the forest. Was this such a good idea I thought. Can't back out now, you've already sent the letter. I walked slowly in, only about a metre in so I could see her coming. I waited for about 10 minutes. This was where she was meant to meet me and it was 1 hour until Capture the Flag, so she should be here. I looked around. I sighed in relief. A figure was approaching.
"Hey Ryder." Said Eliza, with a massive grin on her face. She was fully armoured up with a small ballpoint pen in her hand and her helmet by her side.
"Hey Eliza."
"So what was this all about?" She tilted her head to the side. I guess it looked kinda cute, except for the fact that there was a mocking grin on her face, as if she knew something I didn't.
"I wanted to talk to you, away from everyone else." I shrugged as if it wasn't some big deal.
"Why just before Capture the Flag?" Again; the tilting of the head was starting to get on my nerves.
"Because this is the only time I could catch you. Can I just say that you are an amazing artist." I said, in pure amazement. Now it was my turn to grin.
"What? Wait, how would you know!" She looked around to see if anyone was around us.
"These" I took her pictures out from my pocket. "They are amazing!" I waved the pictures in the air in a mocking kind-of way. Eliza started jumping up and down trying to get her pictures. Slowly I stopped teasing an gave her the pictures.
"Thank you." She said quietly. "I draw to control my ADHD. It's hard but I manage to do it." I observed her face. It was in deep concentration, trying to find if any of her pictures were torn. There was a crease on her forehead showing disappointment. Her mouth was set out in a frown. It made me grin. In the light of the setting sun, her face glowed, making her eyes stand out.
"When did you come to camp?" She said curiously, finally looking up.
"Well, about a year ago." I said. "You know, I would have to say that you took a very different approach to camp, well different to mine anyway."
"How so?"
"I guess you could say that it was too much too handle, so I ran away, into the forest and sat there all night. Eventually I was overcome by cold and came back into camp. I was the laughing stock of camp for a week, well until I did sword fighting. It was as if I had become famous; everyone wanted to know me. Since then I have managed to become pretty popular and good at other things, like nicking the basic essentials for new comers."
I scratched the back of my head, feeling nervous. "Um...Eliza, you know like...first day. Yeah, and how I winked. Well I've been dying to get this out but...um...I really like you."
"What a surprise because so do I..." She let the words hang in the air, and before I could actually process what she had said, she came in close, standing on her tippy toes, and kissed my cheek. Her lips were cold yet soft brushing against my cheek. I felt the pink rise up and stain my cheeks as she pulled away.
"I have been wanting to do that for a while now." She whispered. Then she stepped back a bit. "So are you coming to Capture the Flag or not." I noticed that she tilted her head to the side, a bit, when she said it. I grinned. I was about to answer when she skipped away, looking back.
"Hey! Eliza, wait!" I ran after her at full pelt, catching up with her just as she exited the forest.
